Chapter 4 - The ConfrontationTrevor stepped into the room.

He had changed out of his work clothes into a crisp black jacket and dark jeans. He looked pristine, composed, and completely untroubled. In his hand, he held a small paper gift bag from a high-end bakery.
"Hannah," he said smoothy, closing the heavy wooden door behind him. "You shouldn't have yelled at me over the phone. You're exhausted. You aren't thinking clearly."
I stood between him and Emma's bed, my heart pounding like a war drum in my chest. "Get out of here, Trevor."
He paused, a faint, pitying smile playing on his lips. "Hannah, honey. Look at her. Look at what we're putting her through. The doctors said her chances of full recovery are less than ten percent. Do you really want her living as a vegetable?"
"She is going to recover!" I hissed, stepping forward, fists clenched at my sides. "I spoke to Nurse Amy. The DNR is canceled. I revoked it! The hospital knows you forged my signature!"
Trevor's smile instantly vanished. His eyes turned dark, cold, and calculated. The charming mask he had worn for seven years slipped away entirely, revealing a stranger.
"You shouldn't have done that, Hannah," he whispered, taking a slow step toward me. "You don't understand the big picture."
"I know about the debt, Trevor!" I shouted, holding up my phone screen, showing the open folder. "I know about the life insurance policy! I know about the chemical compounds from your company!"
He froze, his jaw tightening. For a second, panic flashed across his features, but it was quickly replaced by a terrifying, cold resolve.
"You think anyone will believe a grieving, hysterical mother?" Trevor said, his voice dropping to an icy murmur. "You've been sleep-deprived for three days. You've been acting erratic. If I tell the police you fell apart under the stress and started making wild accusations, who do you think they'll listen to? The father who works sixty hours a week to pay her medical bills, or the hysterical mother who can't accept reality?"
He took another step toward Emma's bed, reaching into his jacket pocket. "We can end her pain quietly tonight, Hannah. We can get through this together. We get the payout, we clear the debt, and we start over."

"You monster," I gasped, stepping directly into his path, blocking him from reaching the IV lines. "Don't touch her!"
Trevor pulled his hand from his jacket, revealing a small glass vial and a pre-filled syringe. "Step aside, Hannah."
