Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand"Security!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, lunging forward with all my weight.

I slammed into Trevor, knocking him sideways into the bedside tray table. Metal trays, sterile bandages, and water cups crashed to the floor in a noisy cascade. Trevor snarled, grabbing my arm and shoving me violently against the wall. Pain shot through my shoulder, but I didn't care.
"Stay away from my daughter!" I shrieked, grabbing a heavy brass desk lamp from the visitor's table and swinging it with everything I had.
The heavy lamp caught him squarely on the side of his shoulder, forcing him to drop the syringe. It clattered across the linoleum floor, rolling under Emma's bed.
"You crazy bitch!" Trevor hissed, clutching his arm.
before he could reach for the syringe, the door to Room 412 burst open. Two hospital security guards, followed by Nurse Amy and the attending ICU physician, rushed into the room.
"What's going on in here?!" the lead security officer shouted, taking in the scene—the overturned table, Trevor nursing his shoulder, and me standing defensively in front of my daughter's bed with a brass lamp raised above my head.
"He tried to kill her!" I screamed, pointing at Trevor. "He has a syringe under the bed! He tried to put something in her IV! Call the police!"
Trevor immediately raised his hands, his face instantly shifting back to a picture of desperate, tearful innocence. "Officers, please! My wife has lost her mind! She hasn't slept in three days! She just attacked me when I tried to comfort her!"
"Check under the bed!" Nurse Amy shouted, pointing past Trevor. "Check under the bed right now!"
One of the security officers knelt down, shining a flashlight underneath the frame. A moment later, he used a gloved hand to pull out the clear plastic syringe, still filled with a cloudy liquid, along with the shattered glass vial.
The officer looked up, his expression hardening as he looked at Trevor. "Sir, step away from the bed and put your hands behind your back. Right now."
"This is a mistake!" Trevor yelled, backing toward the door as the second officer moved in. "She's unstable! I'm her father!"
"Mr. Brooks, do not move!" the lead officer commanded, drawing his taser.
Within seconds, the guards tackled Trevor to the floor, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking hand cuffs around his wrists. Trevor thrashed against the floor, glaring up at me with absolute hatred.
"You ruined everything, Hannah!" he spat, his voice echoing in the small room. "You ruined everything!"
"Take him out of here," the attending doctor ordered sternly. "And call the city police department immediately. Tell them we have an attempted homicide in the pediatric ICU."
As the security guards dragged Trevor out into the hallway, his furious screams fading down the corridor, Nurse Amy rushed to Emma's side, checking her monitors and inspecting her IV lines to ensure nothing had been tampered with.
"She's okay, Hannah," Amy breathed, turning to me with a look of immense relief. "Her vitals are stable. He didn't get to her."
I dropped the brass lamp onto the floor, my legs giving out completely. I sank to my knees beside Emma's bed, burying my face in her thin cotton blanket, sobbing uncontrollably as the adrenaline finally left my body.
A tiny, faint touch brushed against my hair.
I gasped, snapping my head up.
Emma's dark eyes were open, fluttering weakly. Her small fingers reached out from under the blanket, weakly squeezing my thumb.

"Mommy...?" her tiny, raspy voice whispered through the breathing mask.
"I'm here, baby," I wept, gripping her little hand as tight as I dared. "Mommy is right here. You're safe now. You're safe."
