Chapter 7 - Uncovering the LedgerThe following afternoon, leaving Nurse Amy and two armed hospital security officers guarding Emma’s door, I walked into the precinct with Detective Vance. The station was loud and chaotic, but Vance led me into a quiet conference room littered with blue manila folders.

"We executed a search warrant on your home and Trevor’s workplace at 6:00 a.m. today," Vance said, placing a thick stack of printed documents on the table. "What we found goes way beyond an desperate man trying to clear personal credit card debt."

I sat down, pulling the top file toward me. "What do you mean?"

"Your husband wasn't just drowning in debt, Hannah," Vance explained, pointing to a ledger of international bank transfers. "He was running a systematic embezzling scheme at Vance Logistics for over eighteen months. He transferred over $1.2 million out of client escrow accounts into shell corporations in the Cayman Islands."

I stared at the figures in disbelief. "One point two million dollars? But why were our cards maxed out? Why was our mortgage unpaid?"

"Because he lost it all," Vance said grimly. "He was day-trading highly volatile offshore cryptocurrency derivatives. When the market crashed three months ago, his shell accounts were wiped out completely. The company auditors scheduled a surprise external audit for this Friday."

The pieces of the terrifying puzzle finally locked together in my mind.

"He needed half a million dollars fast," I whispered, the horror choking my throat. "He needed Emma's life insurance payout before Friday so he could replace the stolen company funds before the auditors realized he'd been stealing from them."

"Exactly," Vance nodded. "If he covered the deficit, the firm would never report the discrepancy to federal authorities. He sacrificed his child to cover his financial crimes."

"Where is he now?" I asked, my voice hardening.

"He’s in a holding cell downstairs," Vance replied. "He hasn't said a word since his court-appointed attorney arrived. But there's one problem, Hannah."

"What problem?"

"The insurance policy," Vance said, flipping to a stamped legal document. "Because Trevor altered the beneficiary form using your stolen credentials, the insurance firm's fraud department was triggered automatically when he requested the expedited payout. They’ve frozen all family assets—including your joint bank accounts and house title—until the criminal investigation is completed."

I sank back into my chair, the reality of my situation crashing down. I had saved my daughter’s life, but Trevor had left us with nothing. No money, no access to savings, and a mountain of ICU medical bills waiting for us.
