Chapter 14: The Last False Identity

The search for Daniel Hart and Rebecca Shaw expanded across California.
Airports, highways and border crossings were placed under surveillance.
Federal agents released neither name to the press.
They wanted Daniel to believe he still had time.
Ethan remained at a secure location with Sophie.
He reviewed every interaction he had ever had with Dr. Shaw.
She had treated Sophie since infancy.
She knew Claire.
She knew Vanessa.
She had been present at the hospital the night Sophie was born.
According to Margaret’s files, Rebecca Shaw was not her real name.
She was Eleanor Hart.
Daniel’s younger sister.
Margaret had placed all three children into different roles.
Daniel became the enforcer.
Vanessa became the infiltrator.
Eleanor became the observer.
“She was watching Sophie from the day she was born,” Ethan said.
Detective Reyes stood beside a wall covered with photographs and maps.
“She also supplied the medical reports that allowed Vanessa to explain earlier injuries.”
“But she eventually warned me.”
“Only after Marcus told them you had ordered background checks. Her warning may have been designed to gain your trust if Vanessa failed.”
Every apparent act of concern had been another layer of the plan.
Then Reyes received a call.
A traffic camera had identified Rebecca’s vehicle near Big Bear Lake.
The car entered a private mountain road owned by one of Margaret’s shell companies.
Agents surrounded a remote lodge before dawn.
Ethan was ordered to remain behind.
This time, he agreed.
Sophie needed him more than his anger did.
At 6:42 a.m., Reyes called.
“We found Rebecca.”
“And Daniel?”
“Not inside.”
Rebecca surrendered without resistance.
In the lodge basement, agents discovered passports, weapons, cash and medication.
They also found plans for Sophie’s school, Ethan’s office and the Santa Monica safe house.
Daniel had been preparing another attempt.
Rebecca claimed he left during the night.
“Where was he going?” Ethan asked.
“She says she doesn’t know.”
“She is lying.”
“I agree.”
Federal agents questioned Rebecca for nine hours.
She finally spoke after learning Margaret intended to blame the entire operation on her children.
Margaret had kept private recordings describing Daniel, Vanessa and Rebecca as unstable former patients.
If the conspiracy collapsed, she planned to portray herself as their victim.
Rebecca’s loyalty broke.
She revealed Daniel’s final destination.
The Malibu estate.
He believed Claire had hidden another copy of the database inside the house.
Ethan immediately called the officers guarding the property.
No one answered.
Police surrounded the estate within twenty minutes.
The front door stood open.
Inside, every room had been searched.
Furniture was overturned.
Walls had been broken.
Claire’s belongings lay scattered across the floor.
Daniel had returned to the place where the plan began.
A camera in the hidden room activated.
Daniel appeared on the screen.
He stood inside Sophie’s former bedroom.
“Ethan,” he said, “I know you’re watching.”
Ethan viewed the feed from a police command vehicle outside the gates.
Daniel held a lighter.
The floor around him had been covered in gasoline.
“You destroyed my family,” Daniel continued.
Ethan activated the speaker.
“Your mother destroyed it before I knew you existed.”
“Claire belonged to me.”
“Claire escaped you.”
“She came back.”
“She never came back. You hunted her.”
Daniel’s expression twisted.
“You think she loved you?”
“I know she feared you.”
Daniel ignited the lighter.
Behind him stood Claire’s white music box.
“I found the final drive.”
Ethan’s heart tightened.
Daniel opened the music box.
Inside was a small storage device Ethan had never seen.
Claire had hidden more than one copy.
“Let me leave,” Daniel said. “Or I burn the house with the evidence inside.”
“The evidence has already been transmitted.”
“This is not evidence.”
Daniel held up the drive.
“It contains the client payment accounts. Billions of dollars no government has located.”
He wanted leverage.
A helicopter waited beyond the cliff.
Marcus had arranged it before his arrest.
Daniel intended to escape with the stolen accounts and rebuild his life under another identity.
Reyes whispered to Ethan.
“We have officers entering through the tunnel.”
Daniel looked toward the hidden camera.
“Send Sophie to the front gate.”
Ethan’s entire body went cold.
“No.”
“She is the only person I will exchange the drive for.”
“You are never seeing her again.”
“Then Claire’s fortune burns.”
Ethan looked at the house.
It contained memories of his marriage.
Sophie’s first steps.
Claire’s final Christmas.
Years of photographs, letters and personal belongings.
But it was only a house.
“Sophie is worth more than everything inside,” he said.
Then he turned to Reyes.
“Let it burn.”
Daniel’s confidence flickered.
He had expected Ethan to bargain.
He had spent his life believing possessions controlled people.
Ethan refused to be controlled.
Daniel threw the lighter onto the floor.
Flames spread instantly.
He ran toward the cliff exit.
Tactical officers entered through the wine-cellar tunnel.
Daniel fired at them and reached the rear terrace.
The helicopter started beyond the lawn.
Reyes pursued him.
Ethan remained near the command vehicle until he saw an officer fall.
Then Daniel appeared at the edge of the property.
He dragged Reyes in front of him, holding a weapon beneath her jaw.
“Open the gate!” he shouted.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
“You took Claire.”
“No. She chose to leave you.”
“You don’t know what she chose!”
“I heard her final recording.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Ethan continued.
“She died refusing to give you the password.”
Daniel tightened his hold on Reyes.
“She should have given it to me.”
“That is why she never loved you.”
The words broke the last piece of control Daniel possessed.
He aimed at Ethan.
Reyes drove her heel into his knee.
The weapon fired into the ground.
Officers rushed forward.
Daniel stumbled backward toward the cliff.
Ethan reached for him.
For one second, Daniel hung from the edge with Ethan gripping his wrist.
Below them, waves crashed against the rocks.
Daniel looked up.
“Save me.”
Ethan held on.
Despite everything, he tried.
Then Daniel reached beneath his coat with his free hand.
A second weapon appeared.
Reyes shouted.
Ethan released him.
Daniel fell into the darkness below.
The Coast Guard recovered his body later that morning.
Behind them, the Malibu house burned.
Sophie watched the smoke from a secure vehicle farther down the coast.
She looked at Ethan when he returned.
“Is our home gone?”
He knelt beside her.
“The house is gone.”
“Where will we live?”
“Somewhere safe.”
She wrapped her arms around him.

For the first time, Ethan understood that home had never been the walls he built.
It was the child still holding him.
