CHAPTER 23 : SOPHIE’S PLAN

Sophie had not been taken from the garden.
She had walked out.
Security footage showed her following a female counselor through a side entrance.
The counselor, Melissa Crane, had worked at the center for two months.
Her background check was flawless.
Her identification was false.
The real Melissa Crane had died eight years earlier.
Before leaving, Sophie had placed three yellow crayons in a row near the garden gate.
Her therapist recognized the signal.
During safety exercises, Sophie had been taught to leave yellow objects behind if someone forced her to move without speaking.
The crayons pointed toward the parking lot.
A fourth lay near the road.
A fifth was found at a gas station ten miles north.
“She’s leaving a trail,” Reyes said.
Ethan held Sophie’s empty backpack against his chest.
“She knew they were coming.”
The false counselor had approached Sophie and shown her a live video of Ava and another girl.
She threatened to harm them if Sophie called for help.
Sophie agreed to follow.
But she had taken Claire’s old emergency phone from Ethan’s desk.
The device had no active service.
It could still connect to emergency towers.
The same kind of tower used near the lighthouse.
Reyes traced a brief signal to Pier 19.
They arrived to find the pier empty.
A phone rested on the edge above the water.
A recorded message played when Ethan touched it.
Helena’s voice filled the night.
“Sophie is safe for now. Bring Claire’s archive to Senator Vale’s estate tomorrow evening. No police. No copies.”
Reyes looked toward the road.
“She wants us to believe Sophie is helpless.”
“She isn’t,” Ethan said.
At that moment, the phone displayed an unsent text Sophie had typed before losing control of the device.
NOT PIER.
WHITE TREES.
Ethan remembered a drawing Sophie had made after visiting Helena Ward’s office.
A white forest stood behind a large house.
The trees were not natural.
They were sculptures.
Helena’s organization operated a residential treatment campus outside Sacramento.
Its entrance featured thirty white metal trees representing children who had supposedly been saved.
Reyes organized a raid.
Hours later, officers entered the campus.
The dormitories were empty.
Beds remained warm.
In a basement office, they found Ava’s bracelet and Sophie’s yellow shoe.
A security screen showed a live feed.
Sophie and Ava sat inside the back of a moving vehicle.
Sophie stared directly into the camera.
She raised one hand and slowly opened five fingers.
Then two.
Then one.
Reyes searched the archive.
File 521 belonged to a Harbor transportation route.

Its destination was Senator Vale’s private airport.
A plane was scheduled to depart in forty minutes.
