CHAPTER 21 : SIX WORDS AGAIN
Ethan removed Sophie from school.
He doubled security at the center and changed every transportation route.
But Helena continued sending photographs.
Sophie eating breakfast.
Sophie walking through the garden.
Sophie asleep beneath her yellow blanket.
The final image had been taken from inside Ethan’s house.
No windows were broken.
No alarms had activated.
Someone with authorized access had entered.
Reyes searched the home.
Beneath Sophie’s bed, she found a listening device.
Inside the smoke detector was a camera.
Sophie watched the officers remove it.
“Was she watching me sleep?”
Ethan wanted to lie.
He forced himself not to.
“Yes.”
Sophie’s face tightened.
“Why?”
“Because she thinks fear will stop us.”
“Will it?”
“No.”
Sophie looked at the camera inside the evidence bag.
Then she repeated the six words that had destroyed Vanessa’s control.
“You hurt me every single day.”
Ethan knelt beside her.
“Who are you talking to?”
“The woman who watched me.”
That night, Sophie asked to speak with Reyes alone.
Ethan waited outside the room.
Sophie explained that she remembered seeing Helena before.
Not at the center.
Not at the Malibu estate.
At the hospital where Claire had died.
Helena had stood outside Claire’s room pretending to be a nurse.
“She gave Vanessa a yellow bottle,” Sophie said.
“What kind of bottle?”
“Medicine.”
“Did she say anything?”
Sophie closed her eyes.
“She told Vanessa, ‘The mother is becoming a liability.’”
Reyes immediately reopened Claire’s toxicology evidence.
Michael Morgan had confessed to altering Claire’s medication.
But the bottle Sophie described had never been recovered.
Reyes contacted Michael in federal prison.
At first, he refused to speak.
Then she mentioned Helena Ward.
Michael’s breathing changed.
“She’s alive?”
“Yes.”
Michael looked toward the camera above the prison interview table.
“Then none of you are safe.”
He revealed that Claire had secretly copied Harbor’s complete participant list.
The list contained the identities of children, caregivers, doctors, investors and government officials connected to the program.
Claire divided the archive into three parts.
Margaret found one.
Michael destroyed another.
The third had never been located.
“Where did Claire hide it?” Reyes asked.
Michael looked directly at her.
“She gave it to Ethan.”
Reyes returned to the center.
Ethan denied receiving any archive.
Then Sophie remembered something.
During Claire’s final week, she had asked Ethan to sign documents transferring ownership of an old seaside property.
Ethan had assumed it was part of her estate planning.
He searched the records.
The property was a boarded-up hotel near Monterey.
