CHAPTER 22 : THE HOTEL BY THE SEA

The Harbor House had been closed for twenty-two years.
Its roof sagged toward the ocean.
Sand covered the lobby floor.
A rusted chandelier hung above a staircase leading to empty guest rooms.
Ethan, Reyes and two federal agents entered through the side door.
Sophie remained at the center with a security team.
The deed contained no explanation.
Only one handwritten instruction from Claire:
Room 17 belongs to the quiet.
Room 17 appeared ordinary.
A bed.
A dresser.
A cracked mirror.
No documents.
No computers.
No hidden safe.
Ethan stood near the window, listening to the waves.
Then he noticed the room became silent between each impact of water against the rocks.
During those brief pauses, a faint mechanical sound came from behind the wall.
Reyes removed the mirror.
Behind it was a small dial.
The brass key from Claire’s music box fit the center.
The wall opened.
Inside was a climate-controlled compartment containing dozens of drives, paper files and recorded interviews.
Claire’s complete archive.
Ethan found a letter addressed to Sophie.
He did not open it.
Not yet.
Federal agents began cataloging the evidence.
The files identified judges, physicians, foster agencies and donors connected to Harbor.
Several remained in positions of authority.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Senator Adrian Vale.
Vale chaired the national committee responsible for child welfare funding.
He had publicly praised the Claire Bennett Center during its opening.
He had also approved millions of dollars in contracts for Helena Ward’s organization.
Reyes’s phone rang.
The center’s security chief was shouting.
Someone had driven a stolen delivery van through the rear gate.
The driver escaped before guards reached the vehicle.
Inside the van was Nathan Bell.
He had been restrained but was alive.
A message had been written across the windshield:
YOU FOUND THE ARCHIVE.
NOW WE TAKE THE WITNESS.
Ethan called Sophie’s security detail.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Reyes reached another guard.
The man answered in a panic.
Sophie had disappeared from the therapy garden.
The only object left behind was her stuffed rabbit.
May you like
Its stomach had been cut open.
Inside was the silver broken-circle symbol.
