CHAPTER 28 : THE FATHER’S CONFESSION
Thomas Bennett’s confession lasted forty-three minutes.
He described Harbor as a project born from fear.
After losing his first wife in a violent home invasion, Thomas became obsessed with predicting dangerous behavior.
He funded doctors who claimed childhood trauma could be measured, controlled and redirected.
At first, the program was voluntary.
Then Margaret Hart became involved.
Children were placed inside artificial environments without consent.
Their fear became data.
Their families became variables.
Thomas claimed he tried to end the program after learning children had died.
But instead of going to the authorities, he buried the evidence.
He protected the company.
The fortune.
The Bennett name.
“I told myself I was protecting my son,” Thomas said. “The truth is, I was protecting what my son would inherit.”
Ethan watched without moving.
Thomas then explained that the master archive was not stored in one location.
It had been distributed across thousands of financial transactions.
Every Harbor payment contained a fragment.
To reconstruct the full archive, someone needed access to the Bennett family accounts.
Ethan had that access.
So did the independent foundation he had created.
The Claire Bennett Center’s financial system had unknowingly rebuilt the archive when it recovered Margaret’s assets.
Harbor’s entire history was stored inside the center.
That was why Helena had entered the building.
Why Nathan was forced to betray them.
Why Anna needed Sophie.
Claire had designed the reconstruction to require two passwords.
One belonged to Ethan.
The second was a voice phrase recorded by Sophie.
Sophie looked at the computer.
“What do I have to say?”
Ethan closed the screen.
“Nothing.”
“But it can help find the other children.”
“It can also put you in danger.”
Sophie looked toward Ava.
Ava had spent years being told adults knew what was best.
Now she watched Ethan carefully.
Sophie spoke quietly.
“Can I choose?”
Ethan remembered the open doors.
The yellow bedroom.
The shredded letter.
He nodded.
“Yes.”
Sophie agreed to activate the archive under federal protection.
She sat before the microphone.
The system asked for the phrase Claire had taught her.
Sophie breathed slowly.
“The quiet between the waves.”
The archive opened.
Thousands of records appeared.
Locations.
Names.
Payments.
Videos.
Active facilities.
One facility was marked for immediate relocation.
It contained fourteen children.
A timer on the screen showed less than two hours.
The destination field read:
TRANSFER TO INTERNATIONAL WATERS.
Reyes mobilized every available agency.
Then another file opened automatically.
A live camera showed the Claire Bennett Center.
