Chapter 5: Claire’s Hidden Life
Ethan studied the photograph until his vision blurred.
Claire looked younger, perhaps twenty-two.
Daniel Hart stood beside her on a wooden dock, smiling at the camera.
Their hands were intertwined.
On the back, someone had written:
Claire and Daniel — Catalina, 2009.
Ethan had met Claire in 2011.
She had never mentioned Daniel.

Detective Reyes examined the photograph.
“Claire knew Vanessa’s husband before you met her.”
“Maybe they were friends.”
“They look closer than friends.”

When Ethan showed him the photograph, Michael looked away.
“You knew,” Ethan said.
Michael remained silent.
“You knew Claire had a relationship with Daniel Hart.”
“It was complicated.”
“My wife is dead. My daughter was being terrorized inside my home. Do not tell me it was complicated.”
Michael’s shoulders dropped.
“Daniel and Claire were engaged.”
Ethan felt the words strike him physically.
“What happened?”
“Daniel became controlling. He followed her. He checked her phone. He threatened anyone who tried to help her leave.”
“Did Vanessa know Claire?”
“Vanessa was Daniel’s cousin.”
Reyes looked up sharply.
Public records identified Vanessa as Daniel’s wife.
Michael continued.
“Their family relationships were always strange. Vanessa lived with Daniel and his mother after her parents died. Claire said Vanessa was obsessed with him.”
“Did Claire report Daniel?”
“She tried. But Margaret protected him. She had connections at the university. Claire withdrew her complaint and left San Diego.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“She wanted a clean life. She believed Daniel had moved on.”
“Then he married Vanessa.”
Michael’s face tightened.
“I don’t think they were legally married.”
Reyes began checking marriage records.
No valid marriage certificate existed for Daniel Hart and Vanessa Cross.
Vanessa had collected the insurance money using forged documents.
Daniel’s death had also been certified by a doctor connected to Margaret Hart’s research department.
The conspiracy stretched back nearly a decade.
“What were they researching?” Ethan asked.
Reyes searched the archived university records.
Margaret had supervised trials involving memory, anxiety and behavioral response.
The research program was terminated after allegations of unauthorized human testing.
Several records were sealed.
The symbol used by the research team matched the mark on the vials found in Vanessa’s bathroom.
Ethan thought about the puncture marks on Sophie’s arm.
“They were testing something on my daughter.”
“We don’t know that yet,” Reyes said.
“I do.”
Sophie’s blood samples were immediately sent to a specialized laboratory.
Preliminary results detected traces of an experimental sedative.
The drug could cause confusion, emotional instability and memory disruption.
Vanessa had been creating symptoms that could later be used to portray Sophie as mentally ill.
If successful, Vanessa could challenge the trust’s protections.
Ethan walked outside the guesthouse and gripped the railing until his knuckles turned white.
He had built hotels, offices and luxury homes across the country.
He had negotiated billion-dollar contracts.
Yet inside his own house, he had failed to see the danger surrounding his daughter.
Michael joined him.
“Claire loved you,” he said.
“Then why hide Daniel?”
“She was ashamed of how much power she let him have.”
“She should have trusted me.”
“She was afraid he would come back.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Did he?”
Michael hesitated.
“Two months before Claire was diagnosed, she received a letter.”
“What letter?”
“It said Daniel was alive.”
Ethan’s stomach dropped.
“Did you see it?”
“No. Claire burned it.”
“Why didn’t she go to the police?”
“She said Daniel wanted something from her.”
“What?”
Michael looked toward Sophie’s bedroom window.
“Her research.”
Before meeting Ethan, Claire had worked on a medical database containing confidential genetic profiles from thousands of patients.
Some of the information had enormous commercial value.
Claire discovered that Margaret Hart had been stealing data from the university.
Daniel helped sell it to private companies.
Claire gathered evidence.
Then she fled.
“She had proof against them,” Michael said.
“Where is it?”
“She never told me.”
Ethan remembered the final month of Claire’s life.
She had repeatedly asked him to protect Sophie’s music box.
He had thought she was confused from medication.
The music box remained in storage at the Malibu house.
Ethan and Reyes returned under police escort.
They found the white wooden box inside a sealed container of Claire’s belongings.
It played a soft lullaby when opened.

The silver key opened a safe-deposit box.
Before they could leave, an officer called from the hallway.
“Detective, we found something in Mrs. Bennett’s closet.”
A hidden drawer contained several passports.
Each displayed Vanessa’s photograph under a different name.
One passport was issued to a woman named Olivia Grant.
According to official records, Olivia Grant had died seven years earlier.
Another belonged to Anna Mercer.
Ethan stared at Anna’s passport.
Vanessa had not merely held her captive.
She had been traveling under Anna’s identity.
