CHAPTER 25 : ANNA MERCER
The Coast Guard reached the island before sunrise.
The main building resembled a private rehabilitation clinic.
Its doors were unlocked.
Its rooms were clean.
Too clean.
The children were gone.
In a central chamber, investigators found six chairs arranged around a circular table.
Each chair contained a recording device.
One recording had been made less than an hour earlier.
Anna Mercer appeared on the screen.
“I know what you believe about me,” she said.
“I know what Claire believed.”
Anna explained that she had been one of Harbor’s earliest participants.
She had entered the program at age seven.
Unlike Vanessa, she learned to hide her fear.
She gained the trust of her caregivers.
Then she became one of them.
Margaret believed Anna was proof the program worked.
Years later, Anna began secretly helping children escape.
But she never destroyed Harbor.
She took control of it.
“I told myself I was protecting them,” Anna said. “But protection became control. Control became secrecy. Eventually, I could no longer tell the difference between saving a child and deciding their life for them.”
Helena Ward appeared behind her.
Her hands were restrained.
Anna had turned against Helena.
But that did not make Anna innocent.
“I took Sophie because she remembers what Claire saw,” Anna continued. “There is one final truth hidden inside her memory.”
Ethan’s fists tightened.
Reyes continued watching.
Anna claimed Claire had discovered that Harbor used a specific sound pattern during conditioning sessions.
Children heard waves followed by a period of silence.
The phrase “the quiet between the waves” had not begun as Claire’s promise.
It had been Harbor’s command phrase.
Claire later transformed it into something safe for Sophie.
But Sophie may have heard the original version before Claire’s death.
She might remember the location of Harbor’s master archive.
Anna looked directly into the camera.
“I will not harm her. But I need to know what she remembers before Vale’s remaining partners find her.”
The screen changed.
Sophie appeared seated beside Ava.
Neither looked physically injured.
Anna knelt in front of Sophie.
“Your mother told you where the original archive was hidden.”
Sophie stared back.
“No.”
“You remember more than you think.”
“No.”
Anna placed headphones on the table.
Wave sounds began playing.
Sophie’s breathing changed.
Ethan stepped toward the screen as though he could reach her.
Sophie closed her eyes.
Then she whispered something.
The recording ended before the words could be heard.
An officer entered the room.
They had found a tunnel leading to a boat dock.
Anna, Helena and the children had escaped again.
But Sophie had left a message on the wall.
This time, she had not used crayons.
She had written in large black letters:
DADDY, DO NOT GIVE THEM THE RED BOX.
Ethan had no idea what the red box was.
