Chapter 10 - The UnravelingBy midnight, the engagement party had collapsed into an awkward, hasty departure. Guests made polite excuses, retrieved their coats from the cloakroom, and hurried out to their cars, eager to spread the story across Boston's social networks.

Inside the private study, a war was raging.
Arthur Whitmore, the family patriarch, sat in his high-backed leather armchair, resting his hands on his silver-topped cane. His face was grim.
Vanessa stood near the fireplace, crying hysterically, while her father, Richard Sterling, paced the Persian rug furiously.
"This is an outrage, Arthur!" Richard shouted, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk. "My daughter was publicly humiliated by one of your domestic staff! That woman should be in handcuffs by morning!"
"Quiet, Richard," Arthur said, his deep voice cutting through the noise like a rusty blade. He looked over at Ethan, who was standing by the dark window, holding a glass of scotch he hadn't touched. "Ethan. Tell me what happened."
"Vanessa tried to humiliate Naomi," Ethan said flatly, turning around. "When Naomi didn't react, Vanessa tried to kick her. Naomi defended herself without hurting her."
"She grabbed my leg!" Vanessa sobbed. "She threatened me!"
"She asked you not to make her finish it," Ethan corrected coldly. "Because if she had finished it, Vanessa, you would be sitting in an emergency room right now."
Arthur Whitmore raised his hand, halting the argument. He looked at his son with sharp, ancient eyes. "Who is this girl, Ethan? A normal housekeeper doesn't catch a striking foot with one hand while holding a silver tray."
Ethan paused. "I... I don't know, grandfather. She’s just Naomi."
"Well, I know," Arthur said quietly, pulling a manila folder from the side drawer of his desk and tossing it onto the wood. "I had my private security team run a deep background verification on every member of the domestic staff six months ago. I kept this file private because she asked for discretion when she was hired."
Richard Sterling frowned, stepping forward. "What file?"
Arthur opened the folder. Inside was a high-resolution photograph of Naomi Reyes—not in a gray dress, but in a tailored black suit, wearing a tactical earpiece and carrying a sidearm at a federal courthouse.
Underneath the photograph was her official service record:
REYES, NAOMI V. Former Lead Operative — Hale Security International (Private Protection) Specialization: Close-Quarters Combat, Counter-Tactical Defense, Threat Neutralization. Decorations: Commendation for Valor (Philadelphia Incident).
Richard Sterling’s jaw dropped. Vanessa’s sobbing stopped instantly as she stared at the photograph on the desk.
"She was Margaret Hale's top operative for eight years," Arthur explained, his voice filled with a strange, solemn respect. "She has protected foreign dignitaries, survived gunfights, and disarmed trained mercenaries. She left that world to find peace as a housekeeper in our home."

Arthur looked directly at Vanessa, his eyes cold and unyielding.
"You didn't try to kick an defenseless maid tonight, Vanessa," Arthur said softly. "You tried to kick a lethal operative who spared your life out of respect for this house."
