Chapter 13 - The Breached PerimeterThe sudden darkness was absolute.

The hum of the industrial refrigerators died. The security panels along the walls beeped twice before switching to emergency backup batteries, casting a dim, ominous red glow across the stainless-steel counters.
Ethan stood up instinctively. "A power outage? The storm must have brought down a line—"
"No," Naomi cut in instantly. Her voice had changed. The quiet, polite housemaid was gone; in her place stood the Lead Operative of Hale Security.
She was already moving. In two swift strides, she reached the kitchen door, pressing her back against the wall beside the frame, listening intently.
"The main estate line has three redundant underground backups," Naomi whispered, her eyes scanning the dark shadows of the corridor. "And the emergency lights should have kicked in within three seconds. Someone didn't cut the power—someone jammed the estate's central relay board."
Ethan froze. "Who?"
Before Naomi could answer, the faint crack of broken glass echoed from the glass conservatory on the west side of the mansion.
It wasn't the sound of a tree branch falling. It was the calculated, muffled strike of a glass-cutter, followed by the soft, heavy thud of tactical boots landing on marble floorboards.
Naomi reached into her duffel bag. She unzipped a hidden bottom lining and pulled out a sleek, black metallic object—a tactical flashlight with a high-lumen strobe setting, followed by a compact ceramic combat blade she had kept hidden for three years.
Ethan watched in sheer disbelief as the woman who had spent eleven months dusting his library prepared for combat in less than five seconds.
"Mr. Whitmore," Naomi commanded in a low, sharp tone that admitted no argument. "Where is your grandfather?"
"His bedroom... top of the west stairwell," Ethan stammered.
"Go to him. Lock his door from the inside. Do not turn on any lights, do not use your phone, and do not open that door for anyone unless you hear me give you three distinct taps on the wood."

"Naomi, I can't leave you down here alone—"
"Ethan," Naomi said, calling him by his first name for the very first time. She looked him dead in the eye, her gaze cold, lethal, and completely focused. "You're an executive. I’m a weapon. Go protect your grandfather."
