Chapter 17 - The ReckoningBy noon on Monday, the fall of the Sterling family was absolute.

News broadcasts across New England dominated the headlines with the double scandal:
"FINANCIAL TYCOON RICHARD STERLING ARRESTED IN FEDERAL RAID FOR CONSPIRACY AND ATTEMPTED EXTORTION OF WHITMORE DEVELOPMENT."
"VANESSA STERLING DISGRACED FOLLOWING LEAKED BALLROOM VIDEO; STERLING FINANCIAL FILES FOR EMERGENCY BANKRUPTCY."
The video recorded by guests at the engagement ball—showing Vanessa attempting to kick Naomi, only to be effortlessly caught by her ankle—had gone viral online, accumulating millions of views. The image of the arrogant heiress balancing helplessly on one silver heel while a composed maid held her leg became the ultimate symbol of poetic justice.
In a small holding facility down at the federal courthouse, Vanessa sat behind glass, her designer clothes replaced by a orange jumpsuit, her eyes red and swollen from hours of weeping.
Her legal advisor sat across from her with a grim expression.
"Your father’s bail was denied," the lawyer informed her flatly. "The evidence secured by the house's domestic staff was ironclad. He is facing up to twenty years in federal prison. All Sterling assets have been attached by court order."
"Can't we sue her?!" Vanessa shrieked, clutching the desk, her voice cracking. "The maid! She assaulted me! She ruined my life!"
The lawyer looked at Vanessa with weary contempt. "Ms. Sterling, 'the maid' is a decorated former federal protection operative. The police report shows she saved your ex-fiancé's family from armed mercenaries your father hired. If you bring her name up in court, the judge will double your father's sentence out of principle. My advice? Keep your mouth shut and sign the settlement."

Vanessa slumped back in her chair, staring at her trembling hands. The grand life she had built on appearances, status, and cruelty had collapsed like a house of cards.
She had tried to put a maid in her place—only to discover that she herself had been stripped of everything.
