Chapter 18 - The Unwritten RuleTwo weeks after the incident, the winter snow settled quietly over the Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts.

Far away from Boston, situated on twenty acres of quiet pine forest, stood a small wooden cottage overlooking a frozen lake. The air smelled of woodsmoke, fresh pine, and silence.

Naomi stood on the porch, wearing a thick flannel jacket and boots, holding a mug of hot coffee.

She had left Whitmore House four days after the break-in, leaving behind a spotless staff room, a set of shined silver, and a simple thank-you note for Mrs. Gable. She had used her savings to lease the remote cabin for the winter.

Here, surrounded by trees and mountains, there were no cameras, no high society, and no ghosts.

She took a breath of the crisp mountain air, feeling a deep, unshakeable stillness settling into her chest.

A low crunch of tires on gravel sounded down the drive.

Naomi turned her head calmly. A black SUV pulled up near the porch. The driver’s side door opened, and Ethan Whitmore stepped out into the snow.

He wore a dark coat and wool scarf, holding a small leather leather folder under his arm. He looked rested, the deep exhaustion that had once shadowed his eyes completely gone.

"You're hard to find, Naomi Reyes," Ethan said, walking up the wooden steps.

"I trained under Margaret Hale," Naomi replied with a small smile. "I'm only found when I want to be."

Ethan stood beside her on the porch, looking out over the frozen lake. "How is the quiet?"

"It’s good," she said gently. "It’s very good."

Ethan set the leather folder on the porch railing. "My grandfather asked me to deliver this. It’s the final deed for Whitmore House’s security trust, plus your formal severance package. Enough to buy this cabin three times over."

Naomi looked at the folder, then back at Ethan. "I can't accept that, Ethan."

"You saved my grandfather's life," Ethan said softly, turning to face her. "You saved my life. And more than that... you reminded me of who I wanted to be before I let the world tell me who I had to marry."
