Chapter 7 - The Gathering StormBy ten o'clock, the ballroom was a blur of spinning silk gowns, clinking crystal, and flowing thousand-dollar champagne.

Ethan spent the evening fulfilling his duties as host—shaking hands with investors, enduring repetitive congratulations, and smiling for society photographers. But every time he tried to pull Vanessa aside for a quiet moment, she slipped away to hold court near the central dance floor, surrounded by her inner circle of wealthy friends.

"Look at her," whispered Chloe, one of Vanessa’s bridesmaids, holding a champagne flute near the dessert station. "Vanessa is practically glowing. She owns this entire room."

Vanessa stood near the edge of the low stage where the string quartet was playing. Her eyes, however, were searching the room—not for Ethan, but for Naomi.

She found her near the main champagne bar. Naomi moved through the dense crowd with effortless grace, lifting empty flutes from mahogany tables without disturbing a single guest, her face an unreadable mask of polite detachment.

The sight of Naomi’s utter composure infuriated Vanessa.

She thinks she’s above this, Vanessa thought bitterly, her grip tightening around her glass. She stands in my ballroom, looking at these people like they don't matter. Tonight, I’m going to make sure she never forgets who she is.

Vanessa motioned to a passing waiter, taking two fresh glasses of champagne off his tray. She emptied one glass slightly, leaving it half-full, and deliberately stepped toward the center of the ballroom floor where the crowd was thickest.

"Ethan!" Vanessa called out brightly, her voice carrying over the music. "Darling, come here for a moment! The press photographer from the Boston Globe wants a photo of us by the rose tower!"

Ethan walked over, offering a polite smile for the camera. The flashbulbs popped, painting the couple in brilliant white light.

As the applause died down, Vanessa caught sight of Naomi walking past with a tray of used glasses.

The moment was perfect. The room was watching. The camera lenses were still focused on Vanessa.

"Oh, maid!" Vanessa called out loudly, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Could you come take these flutes?"

Naomi paused. She turned smoothly and walked toward Vanessa, holding her brass tray at waist height.

"Yes, Ms. Sterling?" Naomi asked quietly.

Vanessa leaned in as if to place her glass on the tray. But instead of setting it down, she deliberately tilted her hand, pouring the sticky, expensive champagne directly over the front of Naomi’s clean white apron and gray uniform.

The crowd near the stage gasped softly.
