Chapter 8 - The Strike and the Catch"Oh, goodness!" Vanessa exclaimed loudly, her voice ringing across the ballroom. "Look at how clumsy you are! You bumped right into me!"

The music died down. Whispers rippled through the three hundred guests like a sudden draft.
Ethan’s smile vanished instantly. "Vanessa, what are you doing? She didn't bump into you—"
"Ethan, please!" Vanessa interrupted, her voice rising in dramatic indignation, her eyes wide for the surrounding crowd. "She stepped right into my space! This is what I’ve been telling you about the staff—they have no training, no respect!"
Naomi stood completely still. The cold champagne soaked through her apron, but her expression did not change. Her dark eyes remained fixed on Vanessa, calm and terrifyingly clear.
"I apologize if you feel I was too close, Ms. Sterling," Naomi said, her voice dropping into that low, resonant tone that cut through the room’s murmur. "I will clean this up immediately."
The absolute lack of shame or fear in Naomi’s eyes broke the last thread of Vanessa’s control.
Vanessa didn't just want an apology. She wanted to see Naomi break. She wanted to see her cry, drop to her knees, and crawl away like an embarrassed servant.
"You insolent little trash," Vanessa hissed under her breath, her face twisting into pure rage.
Driven by a surge of humiliation and spoiled fury, Vanessa lifted her right leg, kicking her silver stiletto heel directly toward Naomi’s chest—a public, physical degradation meant to knock the maid off her feet and send the brass tray crashing to the floor.
Vanessa smiled for the cameras, expecting the impact.
She expected the crash. She expected the laughter.
What happened next defied everything the guests understood about physics and social hierarchy.
Naomi didn't fall. She didn't even shift her balance.
With the lightning-fast reflexes honed by eight years of high-stakes close-quarters defense, Naomi’s left hand shot out like a strike of steel. Her fingers locked firmly around Vanessa’s ankle in mid-air, inches before the silver heel could touch her chest.
Naomi’s right hand held the brass tray perfectly level. Not a single glass on it wobbled.
For one impossible second, the grand ballroom of Whitmore House went completely silent. Three hundred guests watched Vanessa balance precariously on one silver heel, her face frozen between triumph and absolute terror, while Naomi Reyes stood before her in a plain gray uniform with one hand wrapped firmly around her leg.
Vanessa had expected the maid to fall.

Instead, Naomi looked deep into her eyes and said quietly:
"Please don't make me finish this."
