Chapter 10 - The Reckoning at UptownTwo weeks later, the warm Texas sun broke through the autumn clouds over McKinney Avenue in Uptown Dallas.

The top-floor penthouse at 1400 McKinney stood quiet and bright. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Dallas skyline, illuminating polished hardwood floors and high ceilings.

The locks had been completely re-keyed by high-security locksmiths. All remaining items belonging to Jason Parker had been packed into cardboard boxes and placed into a court-ordered storage facility downtown.

Emily stood by the window, wearing a comfortable oversized sweater and jeans. The swelling on her face had almost completely healed, leaving only a faint, light pink line near her lip.

She turned around as Daniel and I walked into the sunlit living room, carrying two heavy wooden moving crates filled with her favorite books and artwork.

"Where do you want these, baby girl?" Daniel asked, setting his crate down near the fireplace.

Emily looked around her home—the home her father had bought for her years ago, the home she had fought so hard to protect. A soft, genuine smile broke across her face, bright and entirely unshadowed.

"Right here, Dad," she said softly. "Right where they belong."

I walked over, pulling my daughter into a warm, gentle hug, pressing my cheek against hers. "How are you feeling today, Emily?"

"I feel safe, Mom," Emily whispered, looking over my shoulder at Daniel, who was unboxing a framed photograph of the three of us from her college graduation. "For the first time in a really long time... I feel totally safe."

Daniel set the frame on the mantlepiece, adjusted it until it sat perfectly straight, and turned around to face us. His field jacket was unbuttoned, his expression relaxed, calm, and deeply peaceful.

The war was over. The Parker family was facing federal trial without bond; their fraudulent real estate empire had been placed into court receivership; and the deed to the Uptown penthouse remained firmly, permanently in Emily's name.

Daniel walked over, wrapping his broad arms around both of us, holding his ex-wife and his daughter close against his chest in the warm, bright light of the afternoon sun.

Instead, they had brought a father back home—and built a fortress that would stand forever.
