Chapter 6 - The Dawn at St. Paul’s

By six o’clock in the morning, the heavy downpour over Dallas had eased into a gray, cold mist.

Inside the private exam wing at St. Paul University Hospital, the air smelled of antiseptic, iodine, and fresh coffee. I sat on a vinyl chair beside the hospital bed, holding Emily’s left hand in both of mine.

A female forensic medical examiner, Dr. Aris Thorne—a former Army doctor who had served alongside Daniel in Iraq—quietly completed her physical documentation. Her digital camera clicked repeatedly in the dim light, capturing the dark, violent handprints wrapping around Emily’s forearms, the deep lacerations on her swollen cheek, and the bruised impressions on her neck.

"Forensic report is locked and uploaded to the federal portal, Daniel," Dr. Thorne said quietly, setting her tablet on the stainless-steel tray. "Every mark on her body tells a story of sustained, multi-person assault. It’s a rock-solid felony case."

Emily lay against the raised pillows, wearing clean hospital scrubs. Her right eye was still swollen shut, but her breathing was finally slow and steady. The raw, hysterical terror that had driven her to my doorstep three hours ago had been replaced by the quiet safety of knowing her father was standing by the door.

Daniel stood by the window, staring out at the gray skyline of downtown Dallas. He held a hot paper cup of black coffee, his field jacket unzipped.

"How are her hands?" Daniel asked, not turning around.

"X-rays came back clear," Dr. Thorne replied. "No fractures in the metacarpals, but deep soft-tissue contusions where she was pinned to the floor."

The door to the private room clicked open, and two men in crisp charcoal suits walked in. The lead investigator, Marcus Vance—a senior agent with the Texas Department of Public Safety and another veteran from Daniel's old command—handed Daniel a thin manila folder.

"It’s done, Colonel," Vance reported, his voice low and precise. "Dallas PD executed the felony arrest warrants at the Grand Regency forty minutes ago. They picked up Jason Parker in the lobby while he was trying to check out with his luggage."

Emily flinched slightly at the sound of Jason's name. I squeezed her hand gently.

"And Linda?" I asked, looking up.

"Mrs. Parker was taken into custody in Suite 1204 alongside her three sisters," Vance said, a faint, cold smile touching his lips. "She tried to hit the arresting officer with her designer handbag. They added assault on a law enforcement officer to her docket. She’s currently sitting in the Lew Sterrett Detention Center without bond."

Daniel turned slowly from the window, taking a slow sip of his coffee.

"What about the real estate assets?" Daniel asked.

"The federal court executed emergency freezing orders on all thirty-two commercial properties owned by Parker Family Real Estate LLC," Vance confirmed. "The IRS Criminal Investigation unit seized their headquarters on Elm Street at 5:30 AM. Richard Parker is currently under house arrest at his estate in Preston Hollow."

Daniel nodded once, his face completely unreadable.

"Good," Daniel said. "Now we take the condo."
