Chapter 12 - The DepositionIn early February, the formal pre-trial depositions commenced at the Earle Cabell Federal Building downtown.

Because of the physical and emotional trauma Emily had endured, the federal magistrate had granted a motion allowing her deposition to be conducted in a secure, private room with only legal counsel, the court reporter, and her parents present.

Emily sat at the polished conference table, dressed in a simple navy blazer and white blouse. Her posture was straight, her hands folded neatly over her lap. Her physical bruises had healed months ago, leaving her skin clear, but the inner strength she had forged was visible in every gesture.

Sitting across the table via video link from the federal detention center was Jason Parker.

He wore an orange jumpsuit, his hair buzzed short, his posture slouched and broken. Beside him sat his public defender.

The Assistant U.S. Attorney, a sharp, unyielding woman named Evelyn Reed, stepped up to the microphone.

"Dr. Carter-Parker," Ms. Reed began gently, "for the record, please describe the events that occurred between midnight and 3:00 AM on the night of your wedding."

Emily took a slow, deep breath. She didn't look away from the camera screen. She looked straight into her ex-husband's eyes.

"After the reception," Emily said, her voice clear and completely unshakeable, "Jason escorted me to Suite 1204. He locked the door behind us, told me he was going to settle the bar tab, and left. Twenty minutes later, his mother, Linda Parker, entered the room with six female relatives."

Jason squeezed his eyes shut on the screen, lowering his head.

"Linda produced a forged power of attorney and deed transfer document," Emily continued, her tone steady and clinical. "She demanded I sign over full ownership of my Uptown penthouse to the Parker Family LLC. When I refused, she struck me across the face."

Ms. Reed stepped forward. "How many times were you struck, Emily?"

"I counted forty blows before I lost consciousness on the floor," Emily testified. "During the assault, I heard Jason’s voice outside the hallway door."

"What did Mr. Parker say?"

"He told his mother not to hit my face too much because people would notice at the Sunday brunch," Emily stated softly. "He then held the door shut from the outside so I could not escape."

In the video frame, Jason burst into silent, pathetic tears, covering his face with his cuffed hands.

Emily paused, looking at her former husband with an expression not of anger, but of absolute, clinical detachment.

"I have nothing further to say to him," Emily concluded, looking at the prosecutor. "The truth speaks for itself."

Sitting beside her, Daniel laid his hand over Emily's folded fingers, giving her a quiet, proud nod.
