Chapter 5 - The First StrikeThe room was deathly quiet, saved for the howling rain coming through the broken glass door and the sound of Jason weeping softly on the floor.

Linda swallowed hard, her hand clutching her chest. "You're... you're bluffing. You're just a retired soldier. You have nothing!"
Daniel pulled a black tactical satellite smartphone from his jacket pocket. He tapped the screen three times and set it on speakerphone on the marble table.
The phone rang once. A crisp, professional female voice answered immediately.
"Colonel Carter. Operation Vanguard is active. We are standing by."
"Execute Phase One," Daniel commanded flatly.
"Understood, Colonel. Accessing Parker Real Estate Holdings network now."
Daniel looked up at Linda, whose face had gone completely gray.
"Do you know who runs the United States Treasury Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, Linda?" Daniel asked casually. "My former communications officer from the 75th Ranger Regiment. Do you know who heads the regional IRS Criminal Investigation division in Texas? A man whose life I saved in Kandahar in 2011."
On the phone, keypads clicked rapidly.
"Phase One complete, Colonel," the voice reported over the speaker. "We have flagged twenty-four illegal wire transfers executed by Parker Family Real Estate LLC over the past eighteen months. Total value: fourteen million dollars. Emergency freezes have been placed on all domestic accounts. Federal arrest warrants for wire fraud and tax evasion are currently being generated for Richard Parker and Judge Edward Parker."
Linda’s phone on the table suddenly began to buzz violently.
She looked down at the screen in horror. The caller ID read: HUSBAND.
She picked it up with shaking hands and pressed it to her ear. "R-Richard?"
"LINDA! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!" her husband’s voice screamed through the receiver, so loud everyone in the suite could hear it. "The FBI just raided our main office downtown! They froze every single one of our operating accounts! Edward just called me—the state bar association just suspended his judicial license pending a federal corruption indictment! WHAT DID YOU DO?!"
Linda dropped the phone onto the floor. It clattered against the wood, her husband's hysterical screaming still echoing from the small speaker.
She looked up at Daniel, her eyes wide with unadulterated, paralyzing terror. She fell to her knees right beside her sobbing son, grabbing the edge of the marble table to keep from collapsing entirely.
"Please..." Linda begged, her arrogant voice breaking into pitiful, desperate weeping. "Please... stop... I'll give you whatever you want! Money... the hotel... anything! Just stop it!"
Daniel reached down and picked his Sig Sauer off the table, sliding it back into his shoulder holster. He zipped up his field jacket, looking down at the broken woman kneeling at his feet.
"You had forty slaps, Linda," Daniel said softly, stepping toward the door. "My daughter counted forty before she couldn't keep track anymore."

He paused at the threshold, turning his head slightly.
"I haven't even reached ten yet," Daniel said. "By the time the sun comes up over Dallas, your family won't even own the clothes on your back."
