Chapter 13 - The Cracks in the DefenseTwo weeks after the depositions, the unity of the Parker family legal team completely fractured.

Faced with overwhelming physical evidence, forensic medical reports, intercepted phone recordings, and sworn testimony from former employees, Linda Parker’s three sisters entered into independent plea agreements with the state.
I sat in Attorney Sarah Vance’s office overlooking Pioneer Plaza as she briefed us on the development.
"Linda's sisters—Patricia, Susan, and Karen—have agreed to testify for the prosecution," Sarah explained, handing us copies of the signed proffer agreements.
"What are they offering?" I asked.
"Full, detailed testimony regarding the pre-planning of the hotel room assault," Sarah revealed. "They confirmed under oath that Linda had planned the encounter three weeks before the wedding. They state that Linda explicitly told them they were going to 'break the girl's spirit' so she wouldn't contest the forged line of credit."
Daniel sat in the leather armchair, reviewing the sworn statements.
"Did they mention Jason?" Daniel asked.
"Yes," Sarah said. "They confirmed that Jason was fully aware of the plan. In fact, he was the one who provided his mother with the hotel keycard copy and agreed to stand guard in the hallway to ensure no hotel staff interfered."
"So the entire narrative of a 'spontaneous family argument' is completely dead," I said.
"It's destroyed," Sarah confirmed. "The district attorney has upgraded Linda's charges to include Pre-meditated Felony Conspiracy and Aggravated Kidnapping. She is facing a mandatory minimum of twenty-five years in state prison without parole."
Daniel leaned back in his chair, looking out the window at the Dallas skyline.
"And Judge Edward Parker?" Daniel asked.
"Edward’s federal bribery trial set for next month has been expedited," Sarah noted. "The state bar association permanently revoked his law license yesterday. He’s currently under house arrest wearing an electronic ankle monitor in Fort Worth."

"A family built on lies," I whispered, shaking my head. "It took twenty years to build, and it collapsed in twenty-four hours."
"Because they crossed a line," Daniel said softly. "They mistook kindness for weakness."
