Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at Preston HollowAt one o'clock in the afternoon, a fleet of three black SUVs pulled up to the wrought-iron security gates of the Parker estate in Preston Hollow—one of the wealthiest gated neighborhoods in Dallas.

Daniel sat in the front passenger seat of the lead vehicle. I sat in the back alongside Agent Marcus Vance.
I had insisted on coming. Nine years ago, when Daniel and I divorced, I had felt powerless, watching him walk away into a world of conflict I couldn't understand. But today, standing up for our daughter, we were entirely united.
The heavy iron gates were locked, but Vance simply activated the federal emergency override beacon on the dash. The gates swung open automatically.
The SUVs swept up the long, brick-paved driveway, stopping in front of a sprawling, ten-thousand-square-foot Mediterranean mansion with limestone pillars and manicured fountains.
Standing on the front portico, flanked by two private defense attorneys in three-piece suits, was Richard Parker—Jason’s father.
He was a tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties, wearing an expensive silk polo shirt and slacks, though his face was pale and slick with nervous sweat.
Daniel stepped out of the SUV, pulling his field jacket tight against the cold Texas wind. He walked up the stone steps with the unyielding momentum of a tank.
"Colonel Carter!" Richard’s lead attorney stepped forward, holding up a manicured hand. "I am Harrison Cole, legal counsel for Mr. Parker. You are currently trespassing on private property—"
Daniel didn't even look at the lawyer. He walked straight past him, stopping eighteen inches from Richard Parker's chest.
"Where is your brother-in-law?" Daniel asked calmly.
Richard swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the black SUVs parked in his driveway. "Edward... Edward is at his home in Fort Worth. Look, Carter... we can settle this. This whole thing is an unfortunate family misunderstanding—"
SLAP!
The open-palmed strike was so fast, so precise, that neither attorney had time to react.
Richard’s head snapped sideways, and he stumbled back against the heavy carved mahogany doors, blood spurting instantly from his lip.
"That wasn't for my daughter," Daniel whispered, leaning in close as Richard clutched his bleeding mouth in terror. "That was for making me wait until one o'clock to look you in the eye."
"You... you can't touch him!" Attorney Cole yelled frantically, pulling out his phone. "I'm calling the police!"
Agent Vance stepped up the stairs, unclipped his badge reel, and held his federal credentials two inches from the lawyer's face.
"Texas Department of Public Safety, Special Investigations Division," Vance announced flatly. "Mr. Cole, if you touch that phone, I will arrest you immediately for obstruction of a federal racketeering investigation."
Cole’s hand froze. He looked at the badge, then at the two armed state troopers stepping out of the second SUV, and slowly slid his phone back into his pocket.
Daniel looked down at Richard Parker, who was cowering against the door.
"Your wife is sitting in a federal holding cell," Daniel told him. "Your son is being processed for felony assault and forgery. And in thirty minutes, the Sheriff's Department will execute an emergency seizure writ on this house."

Richard stared up at him in sheer, unadulterated horror. "Seize my house?! You can't seize my home!"
"This house was built on laundered capital from forged commercial deeds," Daniel said, his voice as cold as steel. "My daughter’s penthouse paid for your front fountain. Now, get your coat. You're going to the courthouse."
