Chapter 10 - The Ambush at the Hospital

At 4:00 PM, near the end of my shift, the sky darkened, bringing a sudden summer thunderstorm over the city.
I was finishing patient charts when the power in the pediatric ward suddenly cut out!
The emergency red lights flickered on!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Heavy automatic gunfire shattered the glass doors of the lower hospital lobby! Screams echoed up the stairwells!
Marcus rushed into the nurse's station, drawing his suppressed sidearm! "Jessica! Move! Now!"
"What's happening?!" I panicked, grabbing my coat!
"Moretti hitmen breached the ground level!" Marcus yelled, pulling me toward the rear service elevator. "They tracked your shift schedule! They're coming for you!"
We scrambled into the service elevator, but before the doors could close—
BOOM!
An explosive device shattered the elevator shaft control box! The elevator shuddered violently, grinding to a halt between the third and fourth floors!
Smoke poured through the ceiling vents!
Outside the shaft, heavy footsteps pounded against the concrete floor.
"Find the nurse!" a voice with a thick Italian accent barked through the door. "Don Moretti wants her alive! We use her to force Giovanni to sign over the docks!"

I clutched my chest, hiding in the dark corner of the stalled elevator as Marcus raised his weapon toward the metal doors.
"They're not taking you, Jessica," Marcus whispered firmly. "Hold on."
