Chapter 9 - The Pediatric Shift

Despite the luxury of the Fierro estate, I refused to abandon my passion.
At 7:00 AM on Monday, I arrived at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital for my normal nursing shift in the pediatric ward.
However, things were no longer normal.
Two massive, black-suited guards—Marcus and Mateo—stood outside the pediatric ward doors, dressed in discrete tactical suits, keeping watch over the hallway.
My co-workers stared at me in absolute shock as I walked into the nurse's station wearing my pink scrubs... and the twelve-carat canary diamond ring.
"Jessica?!" my best friend and fellow nurse, Sarah, gasped, grabbing my left hand! "Is... is that real?! The news said you married Giovanni Fierro!"
"It's a long story, Sarah," I blushed, trying to tuck my hand into my scrub pocket.
"A long story?!" Sarah squealed in a whisper. "Girl, the most dangerous billionaire in Chicago just put half his real estate empire into your name! It's on the front page of the Tribune!"
Before I could answer, my desk phone rang. It was the ER reception.
"Jessica," the receptionist stammered nervously. "There's an emergency delivery for you in the lobby. A private courier."
I walked down to the lobby, flanked by Marcus.
Standing near the entrance was a florist holding a massive bouquet of one hundred fresh white roses, accompanied by a small velvet card.
I opened the card. Written in sharp, elegant handwriting were the words:
“To the woman who saved my heart. Stay safe today, my Queen. — G.”

I held the roses against my chest, feeling a rush of warmth and affection that had nothing to do with fake contracts or mob protection.
I was falling in love with Giovanni Fierro.
