Chapter 7 - The Contract Signed

Lucia thrashed against his grip, her face red with humiliation.
"My father will declare war on the Fierro family for this insult, Giovanni!" Lucia screamed as two of Giovanni’s guards grabbed her arms, pulling her back toward the front door. "He knows this marriage is a sham! He knows you picked a weak girl to dodge the contract!"
"Tell your father I look forward to his war," Giovanni said coldly, waving his hand to have her escorted out.
The heavy front doors slammed shut, leaving the kitchen in tense silence.
I turned to Giovanni, my chest heaving. "She had a gun, Giovanni! In front of Lily!"
"She won't come back," Giovanni assured me, walking over to check on Lily, gently patting her head. "Marcus, double the gate guards. No one enters without level-one clearance."
"This isn't fake anymore, is it?" I asked, my voice trembling as I leaned against the kitchen counter. "Lucia's father is going to come after us."
Giovanni looked at me, his dark eyes fierce and unyielding.
"I will dismantle the Moretti family before they take one breath near you or Lily," he promised. "But to make this legally unbreakable in court, we need to sign formal marital agreements today. My lawyers are upstairs."
I looked at Lily, who was sitting at the island eating pancakes, completely safe, warm, and protected for the first time in five years.

I looked at the giant ring on my finger.
"Bring the papers," I said.
