Chapter 16 - Shadows in the GlassTwo years passed in peace, but peace in Chicago is often a temporary luxury.

The Fierro Estate had transformed from a guarded fortress into a home filled with life, laughter, and the steady rhythm of a growing family. Lily was now seven, thriving in school, and protective of her little brother Mateo, who was beginning to toddle across the marble floors with boundless energy.

Giovanni had completely divested from the remaining shadowy networks he once controlled. His fortune was now tied entirely to legitimate logistics, real estate, and public infrastructure projects. To the world, Giovanni Fierro was a retired titan of industry, a prominent philanthropist, and a devoted family man.

Yet, old debts in the Underworld are never truly paid—they are merely deferred.

It was an unseasonably cold October evening. Rain lashed against the tall French windows of our Gold Coast home. Giovanni was in the study, reviewing municipal development plans, while I was sitting by the fireplace in the main salon, helping Lily with her spelling homework while Mateo napped upstairs.

A soft knock sounded at the study door. Marcus, who now served as the chief of our legitimate security firm, stepped inside. His expression was tight, his jaw clenched in a way I hadn't seen since the fall of Moretti.

I closed Lily’s notebook and walked toward the study.

"What is it, Marcus?" Giovanni asked, setting down his pen.

Marcus laid a heavy black envelope onto the mahogany desk. "This was delivered to our security gate twenty minutes ago by a courier who disappeared into traffic before the guards could intercept him."

Giovanni picked up the envelope. It bore no return address, only a single crest stamped in black wax: a coiled viper surrounding a broken crown.

My breath hitched. "The Valenti Syndicate."

The Valentis were the dominant crime family of New York—and the former regional allies of Don Moretti. For years, they had remained silent, watching the federal destruction of the Chicago outfit from a distance.

Giovanni broke the wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment. Written in elegant, copperplate calligraphy were three sentences:

The ledger of the Midwest was closed prematurely, Fierro. The blood of your predecessors still waters the soil of Chicago, and the crown cannot be abandoned so easily. Meet us at the Grand Park Fountain on Friday, or we will reopen the ledger ourselves.

Giovanni’s face turned to stone. His dark eyes flickered with the cold, lethal intelligence that had once made the entire city tremble.

"They want the territory," Giovanni said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "They think because I went legitimate, I grew soft."

"Giovanni, no," I whispered, stepping beside him and gripping his arm. "We left that life behind. The FBI cleared us. You gave everything up."

"I gave up the empire, Jessica," Giovanni replied, turning to look into my eyes, his touch instantly softening as his large hand cradled my cheek. "But I will never give up my family. If the Valentis think they can threaten my wife and children, they are going to learn why Don Moretti ended up in a federal cage."
