Chapter 10 - The Mastermind's ReturnBy Friday morning, the story of Mercer Logistics had completely shattered the Chicago business world.

Headlines across major financial news outlets read:
“Mercer Logistics Founder Arrested for Felony Domestic Battery; $3.8M Embezzlement Scheme Uncovered.”
“Transportation Giant Placed Under Federal Receivership After CEO Arrested.”
At 10:00 AM, the primary board meeting for Mercer Logistics was convened via an emergency secure video conference.
The seven board members—all men who had spent years nodding along to Evan’s charismatic speeches while ignoring my quiet presence in the corner of the room—sat around the polished mahogany table in the main conference room, looking pale, anxious, and deeply unsettled.
At the head of the table sat an empty leather chair.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
The room fell into absolute, suffocating silence.
I walked into the boardroom.
I was wearing a tailored black double-breasted suit, my dark hair pulled back into a slick, sharp bun. I was using a sleek, polished carbon-fiber cane to support my left leg, which was fitted with a discreet medical brace beneath my trousers.
Beside me walked James Vance and a team of four senior forensic accountants carrying heavy silver cases.
The board members scrambled to their feet, their eyes wide with shock.
"Claire..." one senior board member stammered, his voice trembling. "We... we heard you were in the hospital! We had no idea you were coming today!"
I didn't answer right away.
I walked slowly to the head of the table, the rhythmic thud... click... thud... click of my carbon-fiber cane echoing against the hardwood floor like a countdown clock.
I reached the head of the table, set my cane against the armrest, and took my seat in the CEO's chair.
I looked around the room, meeting the eyes of every single man who had once treated me as an invisible asset.
"Evan Mercer is in federal custody," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet room like a diamond blade. "Richard Mercer is facing charges of wire fraud and money laundering. And as of 9:00 AM this morning, I have resumed my role as Founder, CEO, and primary shareholder of Mercer Logistics."

I leaned forward, resting my hands flat on the mahogany desk.
"Now, gentlemen," I smiled faintly. "Let's talk about where my $3.8 million went."
