Chapter 7 - The LockoutCLICK. CLICK.

The cold steel cuffs snapped shut around Evan’s wrists right in the middle of the hospital hallway.
"Dad! Do something!" Evan screamed, thrashing as the officer pulled his arms behind his back. "Call the judge! Call Marcus from the firm! Dad!"
"Let go of my son!" Diane shrieked, clawing at the officer's arm until the second officer forcefully shoved her back. "You can't do this! Do you know who we are?!"
"Ma'am, back away or you will be arrested for obstruction of justice!" the officer warned sternly.
Richard reached frantically into his pocket for his phone, dialing his corporate lawyer with shaking fingers. But before he could even press the phone to his ear, James Vance handed him a thick stack of legal notices.
"Don't bother calling your corporate counsel, Richard," James said quietly. "Your firm’s legal retainer was paid through Mercer Logistics' primary escrow account. As of two hours ago, Claire has exercised her right as forty-percent shareholder and founder to suspend all corporate spending pending a full forensic audit."
"She can't do that!" Richard spat, his eyes wide with terror. "I am the Chairman of the Board!"
"And Claire is the registered owner of the intellectual property, routing software, and primary banking guarantees that allow Mercer Logistics to operate," James replied smoothly. "Without her signature, your trucks don't move, your fuel accounts are frozen, and your payroll bounces at midnight."
While Evan was marched down the hallway in handcuffs, screaming obscenities that echoed off the walls, Richard and Diane rushed out of the hospital toward their luxury Mercedes-Benz parked in the executive lot.
Richard slammed his foot on the gas, speeding directly toward the corporate headquarters of Mercer Logistics in downtown Chicago.
"We'll fix this," Richard muttered through gritted teeth, his hands sweating on the leather steering wheel. "We'll call an emergency board meeting. We'll vote her out! We'll claim she's mentally unstable from the injury!"
"Yes!" Diane agreed frantically, reapplying her lipstick with trembling hands. "We'll say she's hysterical! The board will side with us!"
Forty minutes later, Richard’s Mercedes pulled up to the glass-and-steel skyscraper that housed Mercer Logistics.
But as Richard and Diane hurried toward the revolving glass doors, four broad-shouldered men wearing black tactical uniforms and gold security badges stepped out, blocking the entrance.
"Get out of my way," Richard barked, reaching for his electronic keycard. "I'm Richard Mercer, Chairman of this company!"
The lead security officer didn't budge. "Mr. Mercer, your access privileges have been revoked. Effective 7:00 AM, the building owner and primary leaseholder—Mrs. Claire Mercer—has locked out all unauthorized personnel pending federal asset verification."
Richard swiped his keycard against the scanner anyway.
