Chapter 15 - Truth Laid BareThe courtroom lights dimmed.

Two massive television monitors mounted on the courtroom walls roared to life.

The crystal-clear 4K recording from the hidden smoke detector filled the dark room. The sight of Evan looming over me on the marble floor, the cold, cruel smiles on his parents' faces, and the terrifying, brutal impact of the oak cane echoing through the speakers left the courtroom gasping in horror.

CRACK.

My recorded scream echoed off the high plaster ceilings of the courtroom.

On the video, Evan's face was zoomed in close as he leaned down over my trembling form: “Sign it, Claire... Last chance.”

In the jury box, two female jurors covered their mouths, tears welling in their eyes. A male juror gripped the wooden armrest of his chair so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white.

Evan slumped forward on the defense table, burying his face in his cuffed hands, sobbing silently as his own monster-like reflection played out for the world to see.

When the video finished, the lights came back on. The silence in the courtroom was absolute, heavy, and suffocating.

"No further questions, Your Honor," Sarah Jenkins said quietly.

The defense attorney stood up, looked at Evan, looked at the weeping jurors, and slowly shook his head. He didn't even attempt a cross-examination.

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

When they returned, the foreman stood up and read the verdicts into the record with unwavering conviction.

"On the charge of Class X Felony Aggravated Battery... Guilty."

"On the charge of Attempted Extortion... Guilty."

"On the charge of Federal Wire Fraud and Money Laundering... Guilty."

Judge Alan Miller adjusted his glasses and looked down from the bench at Evan and Richard with absolute disdain.

"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Miller declared, his voice echoing like thunder, "I have rarely witnessed such a sickening combination of physical brutality, corporate arrogance, and moral bankruptcy."

He struck his gavel down with a deafening CRACK.

"Evan Mercer, you are sentenced to eighteen years in a state penitentiary without possibility of early parole. Richard Mercer, for your role in the extortion and federal financial fraud, you are sentenced to ten years in federal prison."

As the bailiffs stepped forward, pulling Evan and Richard to their feet and chaining their waists and ankles, Diane screamed from the back row of the gallery, collapsing into hysterics as her husband and son were led away toward the iron doors.

I stood up slowly from the witness box.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply adjusted my coat, looked at the shattered remains of the family that tried to destroy me, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright, beautiful sunshine of my new life.
