Chapter 17 - The Global HorizonTwo years passed.

Under my sole leadership, Vanguard Global Supply didn't just regain its original status; it exploded into an international powerhouse.
I expanded our operations beyond North America, opening strategic distribution hubs in Rotterdam, Singapore, and Veracruz. I launched our proprietary logistics management software, licensing it to major shipping lines across three continents.
The financial recovery was unprecedented. In our second year post-rebrand, Vanguard recorded a staggering $240 million in revenue—more than triple what Mercer Logistics had ever achieved under Evan’s shallow management.
My physical recovery matched my corporate rise. Through months of intensive physical therapy and relentless willpower, my broken leg healed completely. The physical scars remained, a faint line along my shin where titanium plates had once been inserted, but it was no longer a symbol of weakness.
It was my armor.
One evening, after closing a multi-million-dollar acquisition deal for an European air-freight carrier, I stood on the balcony of my new penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Michigan.
My phone rang. It was James.
"Claire, I just thought you should know," James said softly over the line. "The bankruptcy proceedings for Richard Mercer’s remaining assets have concluded."
"What’s left?" I asked smoothly.
"Nothing," James replied. "Every property, every vehicle, and every bank account was liquidated to satisfy the $3.8 million restitution order, IRS back taxes, and court fines. Richard’s personal net worth is currently zero."
I looked out over the dark water of the lake, feeling a deep, quiet calm settle over my soul. "And Diane?"
"Living in a small, one-bedroom rented apartment in rural Indiana," James said. "She’s working part-time as a receptionist at a local dry cleaner to pay her rent. All her country club memberships, luxury designer clothes, and jewelry were seized by the federal marshals."

"Thank you, James," I said softly, and hung up.
There was no hatred left in my heart—only the cold satisfaction of absolute justice.
