Chapter 8 - The Fortress on the LakeWhile the world was burning around Evan and his parents, I was lying in a sunlit private suite on the top floor of the Lakeshore Surgical Facility.

The view outside my floor-to-ceiling windows showed the calm, blue expanse of Lake Michigan. My left leg was heavily bandaged and elevated in a specialized orthopedic frame, but the white-hot agony of the broken bone had been replaced by a steady, managed dull ache thanks to the IV pain pump.

The door to my room opened quietly, and James Vance walked in, carrying a thin leather folder and a hot cup of black coffee.

"How are you feeling, Claire?" he asked, taking a seat in the armchair beside my bed.

"Better than I have in seven years," I said softly, looking at him. "Is it done?"

"Evan is currently sitting in a holding cell at the Central Detention Facility," James reported, opening his folder. "His attorney tried to post bail, but given the severe nature of the video evidence and the flight-risk assessment, the judge remanded him without bond until the formal indictment hearing on Friday."

I let out a long, slow breath. The knot of fear that had lived in my stomach for years finally began to loosen.

"And Richard?" I asked.

"Panicking," James chuckled softly. "He and Diane tried to force their way into headquarters two hours ago. My private security team turned them away at the front door. Right now, Richard is desperately trying to pull funds from his secondary accounts to cover the $3.8 million foreign gap, but he's discovering that every single one of his shell entities has been flagged by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network."

"He thought he was clever," I murmured, staring out at the lake. "He used vendor routing codes from our 2022 expansion. He assumed I never looked at the legacy ledger."

"He underestimated you, Claire. They all did," James said, laying three documents on my bedside table. "Here are the emergency motion papers for the court-appointed receiver. Once the judge signs this tomorrow morning, you will have total operational control over Mercer Logistics. Evan's remaining shares will be frozen as collateral for the criminal restitution."

I picked up a pen from the table, my hand completely steady.

"Where are they staying?" I asked as I signed my name on the line.

"At your Oak Brook estate," James replied. "Or at least, they were until an hour ago."

I paused, looking up at him with a raised eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

James smiled—a sharp, triumphant look. "You owned the estate prior to your marriage, funded entirely through your mother's inheritance trust. I filed an emergency eviction motion on the grounds of domestic violence. Sheriff deputies are at the gates right now, changing the locks and clearing their personal belongings onto the driveway."
