Chapter 11 - The Corporate Purge

The silence in the executive boardroom was so thick you could hear the soft hum of the overhead projector.
"I... I think I speak for the entire board when I say we are horrified by what transpired," offered Arthur Pendelton, the eldest board member, his voice thin and quavering. "Evan lied to all of us, Claire. If we had known—"
"You did know, Arthur," I interrupted softly, resting my chin on my laced fingers. "Or rather, you deliberately chose not to ask where your annual four-percent 'special dividend' was coming from."
I nodded to James Vance. He tapped his tablet, and the massive monitor behind me flickered to life, displaying a complex web of financial transactions highlighted in glowing crimson.
"Over the past three years," I continued, "every single member of this board accepted off-ledger advisory retainers authorized personally by Richard Mercer. Retainers funded directly through the $3.8 million siphoned out of our primary logistics escrow."
Arthur turned ghost-white. Two other board members sitting across from him slumped back in their ergonomic chairs as if punched in the chest.
"You had two choices when Evan started masquerading as the sole visionary of Mercer Logistics," I said, leaning forward until the light of the screen reflected in my eyes. "You could have performed basic due diligence, or you could take the money and stay blind. You chose the money."
"Claire, please," Arthur stammered, pulling at his collar. "We can fix this. We can vote to freeze Evan's stock permanently! We can back your entire restructuring plan!"
"You won't be voting on anything, Arthur," I replied smoothly. "As of 8:00 AM, the Securities and Exchange Commission was handed full copies of these ledgers. By noon, formal subpoenas will be delivered to your personal residences."
I picked up my carbon-fiber cane and stood up, the metal tip making a sharp, final thud against the floorboards.
"Effective immediately, this board is dissolved under Emergency Clause 14 of our founding charter. Security will escort you from the building. Leave your keycards, your company laptops, and your credentials on the table."

As four armed security guards stepped into the room, the men who had spent years treating me as a quiet shadow scrambled out of their chairs, terrified, disgraced, and powerless.
Mercer Logistics was no longer Evan's stage. It was my fortress again.
