Chapter 1 - The Birthday SilkThe grand ballroom of the Cole Estate was built to impress, wrapped in Italian marble, gilded molding, and vaulted ceilings anchored by massive crystal chandeliers. Tonight, it was illuminated for my twenty-eighth birthday party. Fifty guests—city officials, real estate tycoons, and high-society elite—milled around champagne towers, discussing multi-million-dollar land developments.

I stood near the arched terrace doors wearing a simple silver silk gown. In my right hand, I held a glass of dark red Pinot Noir.
In the center of the room stood my husband, Adrian Cole, surrounded by his family. His mother, Margaret, was draped in diamonds that sparkled under the chandelier lights, while his father, Richard, held court about the Cole family's billion-dollar construction empire.
And standing right beside Adrian—far closer than any guest ought to be—was Vanessa Hart.
Vanessa wore a custom silver designer gown that caught every angle of the light. She was twenty-five, the daughter of a prominent city developer, and for the past eight months, she had been sleeping with my husband.
I had discovered the truth three weeks ago through a set of misplaced financial records on Adrian's private tablet. He didn't know I knew. Vanessa didn't know either. For three weeks, I had carried the weight of that secret in total silence, watching them share quiet glances across dinner tables and lingering touches behind closed doors.
To the Coles, I was "poor Elena." Quiet, compliant, lucky Elena. A woman who had come from nothing and should be eternally grateful for the privilege of marrying into the prestigious Cole family.
As I took a small sip of wine, Vanessa detached herself from Adrian's side and glided toward me, a champagne flute held loosely between her French-manicured fingers.
"Elena, darling," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "It’s such a lovely party. Though, I must admit, I was surprised Adrian let you choose the dress. It’s a bit... simple, isn't it? Very sweet, of course. Very modest."
"It suits me, Vanessa," I replied softly, keeping my voice steady. "I’ve never felt the need to wear something loud to be noticed."
Her eyes flicked over my face, a momentary flash of irritation crossing her features before her smirk returned. She took a deliberate step closer, leaning in as if to whisper a secret.
"You know, Adrian told me yesterday that he finds modesty quite boring after a while," she whispered, her lips almost touching my ear. "He said some women are built for marriage, but others are built for passion."
My hand tightened around the stem of my glass. I stepped back, intending to turn away from her toxicity, but her heel caught the hem of my dress. I stumbled backward slightly, my arm jerking as I tried to catch my balance.
The Pinot Noir sloshed out of my glass, spilling in a dark, violent arc straight across the front of Vanessa's silver dress.

The stain bloomed like blood across the pristine fabric.
Vanessa let out a sharp, ear-piercing shriek that cut through the orchestral music and silenced every conversation in the ballroom.
