Chapter 5 - Five BrothersThe black SUVs did not roar up the driveway. They came quietly, their engines humming low like a storm building on the horizon. That quietness somehow made their arrival far more terrifying than a siren.

Through the tall ballroom windows, we watched the first vehicle stop directly beneath the stone portico. Then a second. A third. A fourth. A fifth.
Their bright LED headlights flooded through the glass doors, casting long, sharp shadows across the ballroom marble.
Around us, all conversation died. The fifty guests stood frozen, unsure whether they should leave, stay, or pretend the last half hour had never occurred.
Adrian set his champagne glass down on a nearby table, his knuckles turning white. "What did you do, Elena? Who is that?"
For years, What did you do? was how Adrian started every argument. It was his way of blaming me whenever his world failed to align with his expectations.
Tonight, the question sounded weak. Fragile.
"I called my family," I replied smoothly.
Margaret gave a brittle, sharp laugh. "Your family? Those construction workers from the North Side?"
The heavy grand double doors of the ballroom swung open.
Dominic entered first.
He wore a dark slate overcoat, damp from the rain, his broad shoulders easily filling the doorway. His dark hair was touched with silver at the temples—a change I had only noticed recently because I had seen so little of my family since marrying Adrian.
Behind Dominic walked Matteo, his expression stone-cold as his eyes scanned the room’s exit points.
Beside him was Luca, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, carrying a leather briefcase that held enough legal firepower to destroy corporations.
Next was Gabriel, holding a tablet displaying real-time financial feeds of the Cole empire.
And finally, Nico, his hands shoved casually into his jacket pockets, his sharp eyes taking in every face in the room like a predator picking out prey.
Five brothers. Five powerful men.
Not one of them looked interested in making a loud scene. And that quiet, absolute confidence terrified Adrian more than any shouting match ever could.
Dominic’s eyes scanned the room, ignoring the fifty wealthy guests, ignoring the sparkling chandeliers, until his gaze landed directly on me.
Everything else in the room seemed to vanish from his mind.
He crossed the marble floor with deliberate, heavy strides, his long coat swaying behind him.
"Elena," he said softly.
I had spent the last twenty minutes enduring thirty strikes of a leather whip without shedding a single tear. But hearing my eldest brother say my name in that soft, protective tone nearly broke the iron grip I had on my emotions.
Dominic stopped two feet in front of me. His sharp eyes immediately registered the torn silk at my shoulders, the blood seeped into the fabric of my dress, and the angry red bruising around my wrists.
A dark, terrifying aura seemed to settle over him.
He reached out his large, calloused hand, holding it inches from my shoulder, hesitant to hurt me further.
"Can I hug you?" he asked gently.
May you like
The question struck me harder than any blow Adrian had landed tonight.
Not because it was dramatic. But because it reminded me of what real protection felt like.
