Chapter 14 - The Return to the LakeWith the legal battles concluded and the Cole family's assets completely liquidated or absorbed into Moretti Global, I took two months away from the corporate world to retreat to our family’s Highpoint Lake House.

The scars on my back had healed into thin, faint silvery lines—a quiet reminder of the night I stopped being a victim and reclaimed my birthright.
Every weekend, my five brothers came up from the city.
We gathered around the long teak table on the wide back porch overlooking the crystal-clear water, sharing home-cooked meals, wine, and laughter. The heavy shadow that had hung over my life for three years of marriage to Adrian was completely gone.
One evening, as the sun dipped behind the pine-covered mountains, turning the lake into a sheet of liquid gold, Dominic walked out onto the porch holding two glasses of aged scotch.
He handed one to me and leaned against the wooden railing.
"Gabriel finished the audit on the old Cole estate today," Dominic said softly, watching the sunset.
"What will we do with the house?" I asked, taking a small sip of the scotch.
"That decision belongs to you, Elena," Dominic replied, turning to look at me with immense pride in his dark eyes. "It’s your property now. The land, the mansion, the grounds—all registered solely under your name."
I looked out over the quiet water, thinking back to the dark ballroom, the chandeliers, and the marble floor where I had bled.
"Demolish it," I said without a second's hesitation.
Dominic raised an eyebrow, a small, approving smirk playing on his lips. "Demolish it?"
"Tear the mansion down to the foundation," I said, my voice steady and resolved. "Clear the land, and build the Moretti Foundation Center for Domestic Recovery—a sanctuary for women who need protection, legal representation, and a fresh start."

Dominic smiled—a rare, genuine smile that lit up his stern features—and raised his glass to mine.
"A fitting end," he said. "To a very foolish family."
