Chapter 11 - Into the Deep

The descent into the lower archives felt like stepping back in time. Deep below the polished marble and luxury of the main estate lay the foundation of the original Vance manor. The air grew cooler, carrying the damp scent of stone and aged wood.
Daniel led the group, carrying a heavy flash lantern that cut through the shadows of the subterranean corridor. Behind him walked Emily, followed closely by Dr. Aris, Arthur Vance, two armed security guards, and a visibly frantic Margaret and Vanessa.
"This is ridiculous," Vanessa muttered, her heels clicking loudly against the uneven stone floor. "We are creeping around in a basement because a maid claims she knows about a secret vault? This is insane!"
"Silence, Vanessa," Arthur barked without looking back. "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear from a physical verification."
They reached the end of the long stone hallway, stopping before a massive, reinforced iron door set directly into the bedrock. The door had no digital keypad, no screen, and no network connection. In the center sat an antique brass mechanism surrounding a small glass-and-steel sensor pocket.
"The Katherine Lock," Daniel murmured, shining his lantern onto the brass plate. "My grandfather built this specific vault for her private journals and personal assets. It was designed so that only Katherine—or someone with her exact biological markers—could trigger the mechanical tumbler."
Dr. Aris stepped forward, examining the mechanism carefully. "It's a localized micro-chemical analyzer. It compares a fresh blood or tissue sample directly against a sealed, vacuum-preserved reference sample stored inside the internal mechanical housing. No internet. No digital code. Pure chemistry and mechanics."
Margaret stepped forward, her eyes wide with desperation. "That mechanism is twenty years old! It's probably rusted shut or degraded! You can't rely on ancient junk to make a multi-million dollar corporate decision!"
"There is only one way to find out," Daniel said, turning to Emily. "Are you ready?"
May you like
Emily took a deep breath, looking at the cold iron door. This was the moment. The line between being a framed housekeeper and the rightful heir of the Vance estate lay right behind that brass mechanism.
"I'm ready," Emily said firmly.
