Chapter 20 - The Rising Tide

Two days later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, crystal-clear morning sky over the Vance estate.
The grand foyer, which had been the site of so much humiliation and violence just forty-eight hours prior, was quiet. The oversized brown handbag was gone, locked away in an evidence locker at the precinct. Margaret and Vanessa were being held without bail, facing a mountain of federal and state charges that guaranteed they would spend decades behind bars.
In the primary study, Daniel sat across from Emily, pushing a thick stack of legal documents toward her.
"The board held an emergency session this morning," Daniel said, a subtle, proud smile playing on his lips. "With Margaret and Vanessa out of the picture, and the full biological records verified, the court has officially restored your legal identity as Emily Vance."
Emily looked down at the documents. Her real name was printed in sharp black ink at the top of every page.
"You are now the primary shareholder of Vance Enterprises," Daniel continued. "And the rightful owner of half this estate."
Emily ran her fingers over the smooth paper. "It still feels like a dream. Or a nightmare that somehow turned into a dream."
"You earned this, Emily," Daniel said softly, reaching across the desk to place his hand over hers. "You stood up to them when you had every reason to break. Your mother would be immensely proud of you."
Emily looked up, meeting his warm gaze. "So... what happens now?"
"Now, you learn how to run an empire," Daniel smiled. "And we clean up the rest of the corruption in this company."
Before Emily could answer, a loud, panicked knock echoed at the study door. Arthur Vance rushed into the room, holding a freshly printed encrypted cable message, his face pale and distressed.
"Daniel! Emily!" Arthur gasped, catching his breath. "We have a massive problem. The police just searched Margaret's private vault at the downtown bank."
Daniel stood up immediately. "Did they find the rest of the stolen assets?"
"No," Arthur said, holding up the paper with a trembling hand. "The vault was empty. But they found a message left behind by my late brother—written five years ago."
Emily frowned, a cold chill running down her spine. "A message? What does it say?"
Arthur looked directly at Emily, his voice shaking.
"It says that Katherine’s true child... the child born on the night of the storm... wasn't a girl. It was a set of twins. And the second child... was taken by someone else."
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Daniel froze, his eyes widening in complete shock.

The room fell into a stunned, breathless silence as the implications of the message hit them like a physical blow.
