Chapter 3 - The Broken Lineage

Emily’s mind spun into complete disorientation. The words felt disconnected from reality, like a scene from a play she had been forced to watch rather than live. She lowered the ice pack, her skin pale.

"That's impossible," Emily stammered, standing up so quickly her knees wobbled. "I'm the daughter of a carpenter and a seamstress from Ohio. My parents died in a car crash when I was eighteen. That’s why I took this job! I don't have godmothers, and I certainly don't belong to a family that owns diamond necklaces."

"Your adoptive parents loved you, Emily," Daniel said gently, stepping back to give her space. "They took you in when your biological mother—my aunt—passed away under tragic circumstances. My family lost track of you during the restructuring of the Vance estate years ago. We thought you were gone."

"And Vanessa?" Emily’s voice trembled.

"Vanessa is the daughter of Margaret, my father's second wife," Daniel explained. "She has no blood relation to the Vance line. For five years, she has lived off the wealth of this estate, posing as the primary heiress. If the true line of succession is verified, Vanessa loses her trust fund, her status, and her access to the family vaults."

"So she tried to make me a convicted thief..." Emily realized, her shock turning into cold horror. "If I were arrested for stealing a million-dollar heirloom, no court would ever accept my claim to the estate. I’d be in prison."

"Exactly," Daniel said grimly. "She wanted you discredited, ruined, and locked away before the family board meets next week for the formal reading of the underlying trust."

Before Emily could digest the weight of his words, the heavy oak door of the guest room slammed open. Margaret marched into the room, her eyes blazing with fury, flanked by two private family lawyers.

"Daniel, this madness ends right now!" Margaret demanded, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. "You have detained my daughter downstairs like a common criminal! You have disgraced our family name in front of the most influential elite in the city!"

Daniel slowly turned around, his posture straightening into a wall of unyielding composure. "Vanessa committed a felony, Margaret. She assaulted an employee and attempted to frame her for grand larceny on high-definition video."

"She made a mistake!" Margaret snapped, glaring at Emily with pure venom. "She felt threatened by this servant girl who has been sniffing around the estate archives! I want the police turned away immediately, and I want this girl out of my house before sunrise!"

"She isn't leaving," Daniel said quietly, his tone dropping an octave. "And if anyone is leaving this estate tonight, Margaret, it will be you and your daughter."
