Chapter 15 - Running Out of Air
Silence descended on the sealed vault, broken only by the heavy, hurried breathing of the three trapped people inside. The temperature in the enclosed space began to rise almost immediately.
"Daniel, what do we do?" Emily asked, trying desperately to keep the panic out of her voice. She pulled against the massive iron door again, but it was like trying to move a solid mountain.
"Don't panic," Daniel said calmly, though his tense jaw gave away his alarm. "Panicking burns oxygen faster. We need to stay composed."
Arthur Vance sank into the chair behind the desk, clutching his chest, his face pale and slick with sweat. "The internal manual release... Katherine’s lock was designed to be one-way from the outside unless a secondary mechanical release key was kept inside."
"Where is the key?" Emily asked, searching the desk wildly, tossing aside old papers and pens. "There has to be a key!"
"Look for anything with the family crest," Daniel said, shining his flashlight around the stone walls, inspecting every inch of the smooth masonry. "My mother wouldn't build a trap without an escape route. She was too smart for that."
Emily opened the bottom drawer of the mahogany desk. Inside lay a small wooden jewelry box. Her hands flew to open it, but it was locked with a small silver keyhole.
"Daniel! Here!" she called out.
Daniel rushed over, taking his pocket knife and wedging it into the seam of the small wooden box. With a sharp twist, the wood splintered open.
Inside lay not a key, but a small, heavy silver signet ring featuring the Vance family crest—and a written note in faded blue ink.

Emily picked up the note, her eyes racing over her mother's handwriting:
To my daughter: If you are reading this, it means you have returned to claim what is yours, and you are facing the greed of those who sought to destroy us.
