Chapter 7 - Deeper Lies

The sheer audacity of the claim left Emily speechless. She stared at Vanessa, stunned by how easily the woman could spin an obvious truth into a twisted conspiracy.

"A deepfake?" Daniel chuckled, though there was no humor in his eyes. It was a dark, dangerous sound. "The system is air-gapped, recorded on encrypted local servers with physical time-stamps. You were caught on camera, Vanessa. Accept it."

"We will let the courts decide what is real and what is digital manipulation," Margaret interjected smoothly. "In the meantime, if this... maid... fails the DNA test, she will be arrested immediately for conspiring with you to stage a corporate takeover."

"Enough," Arthur Vance barked, slamming his hand down on the mahogany table. The sharp noise rattled the crystal water glasses. "We are not turning a board proceeding into a soap opera. Dr. Aris, take the sample."

Dr. Aris stepped forward quickly, unsealing a sterile swab. Emily held her breath, opening her mouth as the doctor gently swabbed the inside of her cheek. The procedure took less than ten seconds, but to Emily, it felt like an eternity.

"The sample is secured," Dr. Aris announced, placing the vial into a portable analyzer unit linked to a secure server. "The sequence processing begins now."

As the machine began its quiet internal hum, Vanessa took a slow step toward Emily, leaning down so only Emily and Daniel could hear her bitter whisper.

"You think you’re going to step into my life?" Vanessa hissed, her eyes venomous. "You're a servant. You clean up after people like me. Even if that blood test says you're a Vance, I will tear down this entire enterprise before I let you take a single cent."

Emily looked up, her fear suddenly giving way to a spark of cold anger. The pain on her cheek still throbbed, a constant reminder of the physical assault she had suffered in front of dozens of people.

"You slapped me," Emily said, her voice quiet but remarkably steady. "You tried to ruin my life because you were afraid of who I was. I didn't want any of this when I walked into this house... but now? I’m not going anywhere."

Vanessa’s smile flickered, a momentary glitch in her cruel mask, before she pulled back with a sneer.

"Two hours," Margaret declared, checking her diamond-encrusted watch. "Let's see if your blood is as royal as your pride, little girl."
