Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Morning broke over the Vance estate not with warmth, but with a grey, heavy fog that drifted across the expansive manicured lawns. Emily hadn't slept a wink. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Vanessa's raised hand, heard the sharp crack echoing through the marble foyer, and felt the hot sting of public humiliation.

By 7:00 AM, a quiet knock signaled the arrival of Sarah, an older woman who had worked as the chief housekeeper for over two decades. Instead of her usual strict, professional demeanor, Sarah entered the guest room carrying a tray of breakfast with a expression filled with deep sympathy and respect.

"Good morning, Miss Emily," Sarah said quietly, placing the tray on the side table.

"Please, Sarah... don't call me that," Emily begged, sitting up in bed. "It feels wrong. I should be down in the kitchen helping you prepare the morning service."

Sarah offered a melancholy smile, shaking her head. "Things have changed, child. I knew your mother, you know."

Emily’s eyes widened. "You knew her?"

"I was a junior maid here when Lady Katherine—your mother—lived in this very house," Sarah said, sitting on the edge of a chair near the bed. "She was the kindest soul this family ever had. When she disappeared with you all those years ago, we were told she wanted a quiet life away from the cutthroat politics of the Vance empire. But some of us knew the truth."

"What truth?" Emily asked, leaning forward.

"She was pushed out," Sarah whispered, leaning in closer. "Margaret was already maneuvering to secure her place with the late Master Vance. Katherine knew you wouldn't be safe here as a child. She gave you to a family she trusted completely—the couple who raised you—to keep you hidden until you were strong enough."

Emily felt a lump form in her throat. Her whole life, she had believed her adoptive parents were simply a kind couple who had taken in an orphan from a local system. To realize her entire life had been orchestrated to keep her hidden from the dark ambitions of Margaret and Vanessa was almost too much to bear.

"Why didn't they tell me?" Emily murmured, tears prickling her eyes.

"To protect you," Sarah replied softly. "If you didn't know who you were, you couldn't accidentally reveal it. But fate has a strange way of working, Emily. You came back to this house on your own, looking for work, completely unaware that you were walking right back into your heritage."

Before Emily could answer, the door swung open, and Daniel walked in, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. His face was unreadable, his jaw set in a firm line.

"The geneticist is downstairs with the board's legal representative," Daniel announced. "It’s time to settle this officially."
