Chapter 10 - The Memory in the BasementUnaware of the dark storm gathering in the South District, Claire stood in the middle of the master bedroom suite of the penthouse, looking at herself in the full-length mirror.

She was wearing a soft lilac wool dress that fitted her perfectly, her copper hair styled in loose, elegant waves over her shoulders. Beside her, Lucy was jumping up and down on the edge of the plush king-sized bed, wearing a matching yellow dress with tiny embroidered daisies around the collar.

"Look, Mommy!" Lucy giggled, striking a silly pose. "I look like a princess!"

Claire smiled softly, walking over to smooth down Lucy’s dress. "You are a princess, sweetie."

Daniel walked into the bedroom, buttoning his dark navy suit jacket. He paused in the doorway, his eyes drinking in the sight of both of them. A deep, profound sense of contentment settled into his chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced in five long years.

"The board meeting ended twenty minutes ago," Daniel said, walking over to them. "My mother voted with us. The Sterling Group has been officially removed from the executive council."

Claire let out a quiet sigh of relief. "So it's really over?"

"The corporate side is over," Daniel confirmed, kneeling beside Lucy and handing her a small, velvet-covered box. "And this is for you."

Lucy opened the box with wide eyes. Inside rested a tiny silver charm bracelet featuring a small silver rabbit, a sun, and a tiny blue heart.

"Barnaby!" Lucy gasped in pure delight, lifting her wrist so Daniel could fasten the clasp. "Thank you, Mr. Daniel!"

"You don't have to call me Mr. Daniel, sweetie," Daniel said softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "You can call me... whatever feels comfortable to you."

Lucy looked at him thoughtfully, her gray-blue eyes searching his face. "Can I call you Daddy?"

Daniel felt his breath catch in his throat. Tears welled instantly in his eyes. He reached out, pulling the small girl into a tight, warm hug, burying his face in her red hair. "Yes, sweetheart... yes, you can."

Claire watched them, tears streaming silently down her cheeks. The wall of pain and isolation she had built around her heart for five years was finally, completely crumbling away.

When Daniel stood up, he looked at Claire, his expression turning gentle. "I have Marcus clearing out your old apartment on 8th Avenue today. We're moving all your personal belongings up here."

Claire froze, her smile fading slightly. "My filing cabinet."

Daniel frowned. "Filing cabinet?"

"In the closet of the basement apartment," Claire said, her voice dropping into sudden concern. "I kept every single medical receipt, every doctor's note from when Lucy was born, and... my personal journals from the first year after I was fired. Daniel, those journals contain dates and names of the private investigators Vanessa hired to follow me!"

Daniel’s eyes hardened instantly. He pulled his phone from his pocket, dialing Marcus's direct line. "Marcus, are you at the 8th Avenue property yet?"

Static crackled over the line, followed by the distant, frantic sound of sirens.

"Mr. Vaughn!" Marcus’s voice barked over the speaker, sharp and urgent. "We have a emergency! The 8th Avenue building just erupted in flames! The fire department is on site, but three armed men were spotted fleeing the alleyway two minutes ago!"

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

Daniel’s face turned stone-cold, his eyes burning with a dark, lethal fire.

"Julian Sterling," Daniel growled under his breath. He looked at Claire, his voice dropping into an absolute, unwavering command. "Stay here with Lucy. The security detail in the building is on full lockdown."

"Daniel, no! What are you going to do?!" Claire cried out, grabbing his arm.

May you like

Daniel reached down, holding her face gently between his hands, kissing her forehead with fierce, protective devotion.

"I told you, Claire," Daniel whispered against her skin. "I am going to destroy every single shadow that ever hurt you."
