Chapter 3 - The Paper TrailInside the dark steel cavity sat a single, dust-covered black leather binder and an encrypted silver solid-state drive.

Daniel reached in, his fingers brushing against the cold metal drive before pulling out the heavy leather binder. Laid neatly on top of the documents was an unsealed, handwritten letter addressed directly to him in his father's sharp handwriting: To My Son, Daniel.

Claire stepped closer, her heart hammering against her ribs as she watched Daniel lift the letter. Even Lucy seemed to sense the immense gravity of the moment, standing quietly by her mother’s side and holding the worn rabbit against her chest.

Daniel opened the letter and began to read aloud, his voice thick with unexpressed grief and mounting fury.

"Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I am gone, and the cowardice that consumed my final years has finally been exposed. When Claire Dawson was framed five years ago, I knew she was innocent. I discovered the unauthorized terminal entries came directly from Vanessa Sterling's account, routed through a secondary server in the basement."

Daniel paused, his breath catching in his throat. He turned his eyes toward Vanessa, who looked as if she were about to faint.

"I confronted Vanessa," Daniel continued reading, his voice shaking slightly. "She did not deny it. Instead, she brought me a dossier. A dossier detailing a quiet, off-the-books investment fund I had authorized twenty years ago to save this company from bankruptcy—an illegal scheme that would have stripped our family of everything and landed me in federal prison."

Claire gasped softly, covering her mouth with her hand.

"Vanessa blackmailing me was simple," the letter read. "She promised to destroy the evidence against me if I ensured Claire Dawson was discredited and removed from your life permanently. She knew Claire was pregnant, Daniel. She showed me the laboratory blood tests from the company health clinic before Claire even knew herself. Vanessa feared that if Claire bore your child, your bond with her would become unbreakable, and the Sterling family would lose its influence over the Vaughn empire."

A terrible, suffocating weight fell over the office.

Daniel slowly lowered the letter. His face was entirely devoid of color, his grey-blue eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying rage as he looked at the woman he had spent the last three years considering as a potential wife.

"You knew," Daniel whispered. "You knew she was carrying my child."

"Daniel, it—it wasn't like that!" Vanessa stammered, her voice high-pitched and frantic as she took a step backward, only for Marcus to shift his position, blocking her path entirely. "Your father was weak! He would have ruined the company! I did what I had to do to protect the merger! If you had married a nobody analyst with no family background, the Sterling Group would have pulled their funding! We would have gone bankrupt!"

"You ruined her life!" Daniel roared, slamming his heavy fist down onto the mahogany desk with a force that made the brass lamps jump. "You threw a pregnant woman into the street with nothing! You let me believe she betrayed me!"

"She didn't belong in your world!" Vanessa screamed back, dropping all pretense of innocence. Her eyes flared with bitter jealousy. "Look at her! She’s nothing! She’s been living in a slum for five years while you built an empire! I saved you from a massive mistake!"

"Marcus," Daniel said, his voice instantly dropping back into an icy, dangerous calm. "Call the District Attorney. Tell him I am delivering the master hard drive from Robert Vaughn's safe personally in thirty minutes. Have two security guards escort Miss Sterling to the lower holding room and do not allow her to touch a single electronic device."

"You can't do this!" Vanessa fought as two uniformed security guards entered the office, seizing her arms. "My father is on the board! The Sterling family will destroy you for this, Daniel!"

"Let them try," Daniel said coldly without even looking at her as she was dragged out down the hallway, her high heels dragging uselessly against the carpet until the heavy office doors clicked shut.

Silence reclaimed the room.

Daniel stood by the desk, staring down at the black binder and the encrypted drive. The truth was out, laid bare on the cold wood, but the victory felt utterly hollow. He slowly turned around to face Claire.

She was standing near the doorway, holding Lucy’s small hand. Tears were silently tracking down her cheeks, washing away five years of doubt, pain, and shame. She wasn't a traitor. She had never been a traitor.

Daniel took a slow, hesitant step toward her, feeling smaller and more fragile than he ever had in his life.

"Claire..." he choked out, his eyes dropping down to the little girl watching him with wide, curious eyes. "I... I didn't know. I swear to God, Claire, I didn't know."

Claire looked up at him, her voice trembling as she wiped a tear from her cheek. "I tried to tell you, Daniel. Five years ago... the day after they fired me. I came to your apartment. I waited in the rain for three hours."

Daniel felt as if a knife had been plunged directly into his chest. "I was in Singapore," he remembered with sudden, horrifying clarity. "My father sent me on an emergency trip the morning after your termination. Vanessa took my calls..."

"She answered your apartment door when I knocked," Claire whispered, her voice breaking. "She told me you had already left the country. She told me you knew about the pregnancy, and that you had paid her to make sure I never came back."
