Chapter 13 - The Northwood ConfrontationThe Sterling Estate in Northwood was a sprawling, gated mansion built in the Gilded Age style, surrounded by manicured lawns and fifty-foot wrought-iron gates.

Tonight, however, the grand entrance was dark. The house staff had been dismissed, and the marble foyer was cluttered with half-packed leather luggage, open safes, and scattered documents.
Julian Sterling stood in the center of his father’s study, frantically tossing stacks of bearer bonds and foreign currency into a silver titanium briefcase. His hair was disheveled, his silk tie undone at the collar.
"Come on, come on..." Julian muttered, checking his diamond wristwatch. It was 11:15 PM.
The heavy double doors of the study swung open without warning.
Julian whipped around, pulling a small chrome revolver from his coat pocket. "Who's there?!"
Daniel walked into the room alone, his hands resting casually in his coat pockets. He looked at the chaos, the open safe, and the panicked man holding the gun.
"Put it down, Julian," Daniel said calmly. "You're embarrassing yourself."
"Stay back, Vaughn!" Julian screamed, his hand shaking uncontrollably as he leveled the barrel at Daniel’s chest. "You took everything! You ruined my family! Vanessa is in a federal holding cell, our shares are worthless, and the bank called in our credit lines an hour ago!"
"You ruined yourselves," Daniel said, taking a slow, measured step forward. "Five years ago, you and Vanessa thought you could destroy Claire Dawson because she had no power, no money, and no family to protect her. You treated her like trash you could sweep under the rug."
"She was trash!" Julian yelled, his eyes wild. "She was a nobody from the South District! She had no business sitting at our tables or taking what belonged to us!"
"She was worth ten of you," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dark, terrifying register. He took another step forward, completely ignoring the gun pointed at his heart. "She raised my daughter in a cold basement apartment, working sixty hours a week, while you drank cognac on your family yacht. And tonight, you tried to burn down her memories."
"I should have burned her!" Julian shrieked.
Before Julian could pull the trigger, the glass patio doors behind him shattered inward in an explosion of safety glass.
A high-intensity searchlight from a police helicopter hovering directly above the estate illuminated the entire study in blinding glare. Federal agents in tactical gear poured into the room through the broken glass, weapons raised.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"
Julian froze, blinded by the beam, his ears ringing from the concussive force of the entry. The gun slipped from his trembling, sweaty fingers and clattered onto the hardwood floor.
Within seconds, two agents slammed Julian face-down onto the mahogany desk, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As Julian was dragged past Daniel toward the waiting squad cars outside, he glared up with bitter, defeated hatred. "You think she'll stay with you, Daniel? You think a girl like that belongs in your world?"
Daniel didn't even look at him as the agents pulled him away. "She doesn't belong in my world, Julian," Daniel said quietly. "I am building a new world just for her."
