Chapter 6 - The Penthouse on the Glass Hill

The rain had stopped by the time the Maybach turned onto River Line Drive, leaving the asphalt slick as obsidian under the streetlamps.

Inside the car, Lucy had fallen asleep across Claire’s lap. Her fingers were still looped tightly through the ragged ribbon around Barnaby’s neck, her small head rising and falling with the rhythmic pulse of the engine.

Claire looked out the tinted window at the high-rise residential towers rising like silver pillars against the dark night sky. She recognized the district. Five years ago, it was where Daniel had been looking at floor plans, laughing over architectural sketches on his kitchen table while she made tea. Back then, it had been a dream they talked about in low whispers after long nights in the office.

Now, the car pulled into the private subterranean elevator bay of The Apex—the most exclusive residential tower in the city.

Daniel stepped out first. He didn't ask; he simply reached into the back seat, slid his arms beneath Lucy with practiced gentleness, and lifted her against his shoulder. The child stirred briefly, her forehead resting against the lapel of his tailored suit coat, before settling back into sleep.

"She's light," Daniel said softly, his voice low so as not to wake her. He looked at Claire, his gray-blue eyes holding a mixture of pain and quiet fierce protectiveness. "She shouldn't be this light, Claire."

Claire swallowed the lump in her throat, adjusting her worn handbag over her shoulder as she stepped out onto the polished concrete. "Asthma medicine is expensive, Daniel. Sometimes we had to choose between the inhaler and full groceries."

Every word hit him like a physical blow, but Daniel didn't flinch. He held the elevator door open for her. "Never again."

The private elevator carried them straight to the top floor—a two-story penthouse surrounded by fifty-foot glass walls that framed the entire glittering expanse of the river and the city skyline below.

The interior was stark, luxurious, and cold. White marble floors, dark walnut paneling, and minimal furniture. It was the home of a man who worked sixteen hours a day and used his living space only as a place to sleep.

Daniel walked across the wide living room toward a guest suite near the East wing. He laid Lucy down on the king-sized bed, carefully slipping her shoes off and pulling the heavy down comforter up to her chin. He stayed on one knee beside the bed for a long moment, staring down at her quiet, sleeping face, his hand hovering an inch above her soft red hair as if afraid that touching her might prove she was a dream.

Claire stood in the doorway, watching him.

"She looks so much like you when she sleeps," Claire murmured softly. "She sleeps with her hands folded over her chest. Exactly like you used to."

Daniel stood up slowly and turned to face her. The dim amber lighting of the hallway caught the sharp angles of his face, accentuating the exhaustion in his eyes.

"Why didn't you go to the police, Claire?" Daniel asked, his voice raw. "When Vanessa threatened you... when my father turned his back... why didn't you tear the city apart to reach me?"

"I tried, Daniel," Claire whispered, leaning her head against the doorframe, her strength finally fraying at the edges. "I went to your building three times. The second time, two security guards intercepted me in the lobby. They pulled me into a side room and showed me a signed non-disclosure agreement with my forged signature at the bottom. They told me if I set foot on Vaughn Holdings property again, they would press criminal charges for corporate extortion. I was three months pregnant, Daniel. I was terrified of giving birth in a county jail."

Daniel closed his eyes, his breathing heavy and jagged. "My father... my own father did that to you."

"Your father was trying to protect you from what he thought was a thief," Claire said quietly. "And Vanessa was feeding him every lie he needed to hear."

Daniel took three slow steps forward until he was standing directly in front of her. The scent of his cedar-and-rain cologne enveloped her—a scent she had remembered every single night for five years.

"I am going to fix this, Claire," Daniel promised, his voice dropping into a solemn vow. "Not just the legal papers. Not just the public clearance. I am going to build a fortress around you and Lucy. No one will ever threaten you again."

Claire looked up into his gray-blue eyes, seeing the boy she had loved and the formidable man he had become.

"We aren't the same people we were five years ago, Daniel," she said gently. "You can't just buy us back."

"I don't want to buy you back," Daniel whispered, reaching out to gently brush a stray strand of red hair behind her ear. "I want to earn you back."
