Chapter 7 - The Morning PaperBy seven o'clock the following morning, the financial world erupted into complete chaos.

The front page of the Global Financial Times carried a headline that sent shockwaves through the stock market:
VAUGHN HOLDINGS CLEARS EX-ANALYST OF ALL CHARGES; GUILD OF STERLING GROUP EXPOSED IN HISTORIC CORPORATE FRAME-UP
Below the headline was a full, legally binding public retraction issued personally by the board of directors, accompanied by a copy of Robert Vaughn's notarized affidavit and a formal apology to Claire Dawson.
In the dining room of the penthouse, morning light poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass, illuminating a grand oak table laden with fresh fruit, warm pastries, eggs, and freshly squeezed juice—a spread prepared by Daniel’s private chef, who had been summoned at five in the morning.
Lucy sat at the head of the table, her small legs swinging back and forth inches above the hardwood floor. She was wearing a soft, oversized white sweater that belonged to Claire, her red hair tied up in a messy ponytail. She was happily smearing strawberry jam onto a warm croissant, her stuffed rabbit resting securely in her lap.
Claire sat across from her, sipping hot coffee from a porcelain cup. She was dressed in a simple cream silk blouse and trousers that Daniel’s assistant had delivered earlier that morning.
Daniel stood by the window, a cup of black coffee in his hand, reading the morning reports on his tablet.
"The Sterling Group stock dropped twenty-two percent at the market opening," Daniel said calmly, taking a sip of his coffee. "Julian Sterling signed the transfer papers for their voting shares twenty minutes ago. Vanessa has been placed on administrative leave pending the formal filing of federal fraud charges."
Claire set her coffee cup down with a soft click. "It feels surreal. I spent five years dreading that name... and in twelve hours, you completely dismantled them."
"They built their house on lies, Claire," Daniel said, turning around to look at her. "All I did was pull back the curtain."
Lucy wiped her sticky jam-covered fingers on a linen napkin and looked up at Daniel with wide, curious eyes. "Mr. Daniel?"
Daniel’s heart skipped a beat at the sound of her voice. He set his tablet down on the table instantly, stepping closer to her chair. "Yes, Lucy?"
"Is this your house?"
"It is," Daniel said softly, resting his hand gently on the back of her chair. "Do you like it?"
"It's very big," Lucy said thoughtfully, looking around at the soaring ceilings and white marble walls. "It's bigger than our whole apartment building. But it doesn't have any drawings on the fridge."
Daniel blinked, a small, genuine smile breaking across his face. "Drawings?"
"At home, we have five drawings on the fridge," Lucy explained proudly, holding up her sticky fingers. "I drew a sun, a cat, Barnaby, a red flower, and a big blue house."
Daniel looked at Claire, whose cheeks flushed slightly.
"Then we have a very serious problem," Daniel declared solemnly, pulling a sleek gold Montblanc pen from his coat pocket and pulling a sheet of fine stationery from his leather folder. He laid both on the table in front of Lucy. "Because this fridge is completely empty, and I need the best artist in the city to fix it."
Lucy’s eyes lit up with pure delight. She grabbed the heavy gold pen with both hands and immediately began pressing the nib against the crisp paper, humming a quiet little song to herself.
Daniel looked up at Claire, his eyes softening into something deep and fiercely warm.
"She's incredible, Claire," he murmured softly, stepping around the table to stand beside her chair. "You raised an angel all by yourself."
"She was my only light," Claire whispered, looking up at him, tears shimmering in her eyes. "When everything else was dark... she was the only reason I kept going."
Daniel reached down, taking Claire’s hand in his. This time, she didn't pull away.
Before the quiet moment could settle, Daniel’s private phone began to buzz insistently on the table. He looked down at the screen.
