Chapter 14 - Dawn at The ApexBy five o'clock the next morning, the city was quiet. The rain had finally washed away the smog and grime, leaving a crisp, golden sunrise spreading across the eastern horizon over the river.

In the penthouse living room of The Apex, the soft morning light bathed the floor-to-ceiling glass in warm shades of amber and rose.
Claire sat on the edge of the large plush sofa, a throw blanket draped over her shoulders. She had been awake all night, watching the news ticker broadcast the arrest of Julian Sterling and the formal seizure of the Sterling Group’s assets.
The sound of the private elevator chiming softly made her turn her head.
Daniel walked out into the foyer. He looked exhausted—his suit coat was off, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and his tie removed—but his eyes were clear and serene.
Claire stood up, letting the blanket slip to the sofa, and walked across the marble floor to meet him.
"It's done," Daniel said softly, stopping a foot away from her. "Julian is in federal custody. The enforcers who set the fire have been arrested, and the police recovered your journals from the storage box Marcus saved. Everything is safe, Claire."
Claire looked at him, taking in the faint shadow of exhaustion beneath his eyes, the mud on his polished leather shoes, and the absolute devotion in his posture.
"You went down there yourself," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "Daniel... you could have been hurt."
"I would have torn down the entire city to keep you safe," Daniel said simply.
Tears welled in Claire’s eyes—not tears of fear or heartbreak, but tears of relief five years in the making. She stepped forward, reaching out to wrap her arms tightly around his waist, burying her face against his chest.
Daniel stiffened in brief shock before his arms came around her, pulling her close against him, his face buried in her soft red hair. He held her with a fierce, trembling strength, as if holding the most precious thing in the universe.
"I spent five years believing I was completely alone in the world," Claire sobbed quietly against his shirt. "I thought no one was ever going to fight for us."

"You are never going to be alone again," Daniel promised against her ear, his voice rough with emotion. "I swear to you, Claire... as long as I draw breath, no one will ever hurt you or Lucy again."
They stood together in the glowing golden light of the rising sun for a long time, holding each other as the ghosts of the past five years finally melted away into the quiet morning.
