Chapter 4 - Shadows at the GatesWithin twenty minutes, Arthur had cleared the entire hotel floor.

He didn't care about his scheduled dinner with the city’s mayor, nor did he care about the whispers that would inevitably flood the morning tabloids. He wrapped Lily in his heavy cashmere coat, lifted her small body into his arms, and carried her directly to his sleek, black Maybach parked at the entrance.

As the limousine glided through the rainy streets of Seattle toward the wealthy enclave of Mercer Island, Lily fell fast asleep against the soft leather seat, her tiny hand still holding tight to Arthur’s thumb.

The vehicle turned down a private drive, stopping before massive, wrought-iron security gates adorned with two towering stone lions.

Inside the grand Montgomery Manor, news of Arthur’s sudden return had already set the household into motion.

Standing in the grand foyer was Julian Montgomery, Arthur’s thirty-five-year-old nephew. Julian was a sleek, calculating man who had spent the last eight years positioning himself as the sole heir to the Montgomery empire in Clara’s absence. Beside him stood his mother, Beatrice, a sharp-tongued woman who lived for status and family influence.

When the heavy double doors opened, Arthur walked in carrying the sleeping, tattered child in his arms.

Julian’s eyes narrowed instantly, a cold flick of hostility passing over his face before he quickly masked it with concern.

“Uncle Arthur?” Julian asked, stepping forward with his hands in his pockets. “What is the meaning of this? The staff said you abandoned the mayor’s gala to bring a street child into the house?”

Arthur walked past Julian without slowing his stride, heading straight toward the grand staircase.

“She isn't a street child, Julian,” Arthur said, his voice cold and absolute as he paused on the first step. “She is Clara’s daughter. My granddaughter.”

Beatrice let out a sharp, breathless gasp, clutching her pearl necklace. Julian froze, the color draining slightly from his face.

“Clara’s daughter?” Julian repeated, his voice tight. “Uncle, that’s impossible. Clara disappeared years ago. You can't just bring an unverified child off the street and claim she’s a Montgomery. How do you even know she isn't an imposter sent to target your wealth?”

Arthur turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto Julian with lethal authority.

“She carries Clara’s silver heart, Julian. And she carries my blood.”
