Chapter 20 - The View from the HillTen years later.

The golden light of a summer evening washed over the sprawling lawn of Montgomery Manor on Mercer Island.

In the quiet library overlooking the water, the fire crackled softly. On the mahogany desk sat a framed photograph of a smiling young woman with hazel eyes—Clara—surrounded by fresh white roses.

Out on the grand porch, Arthur Montgomery, now seventy-four, sat in a comfortable rocking chair wrapped in a warm blanket. Though his hair was entirely silver, his face carried a peaceful, contented smile that had eluded him for decades.

A eighteen-year-old Lily stepped out onto the porch, carrying two cups of warm tea. She had grown into a brilliant, graceful young woman, possessing her mother's sharp intelligence and her grandfather's unwavering resolve. Having just graduated at the top of her class in international law and social ethics, she was officially preparing to assume her full seat on the board of Montgomery Global.

She set the tea on the side table and sat on the porch railing beside Arthur, looking out over the sparkling waters of Puget Sound.

"What are you thinking about, Grandpa?" Lily asked softly, taking his aged hand into hers.

Arthur looked at his granddaughter, his eyes filled with profound love and tranquility.

"I was thinking about a rainy Tuesday night ten years ago," Arthur said gently, his voice soft against the evening breeze. "A little girl walked into a room full of crystal chandeliers and rich people, barefoot and hungry."

Lily smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder. "She was just looking for a piece of bread."

"No," Arthur whispered, squeezing her hand tightly. "She was bringing my soul back to me."
