Chapter 16 - The Hall of Justice

The federal courthouse in downtown Seattle was swarmed by news crews, financial reporters, and curious onlookers. The trial of The State v. Julian Montgomery and Beatrice Montgomery had captured the nation’s attention, exposing the rot hidden behind the gilded doors of one of America’s wealthiest dynasties.

Inside the packed courtroom, Julian and Beatrice sat at the defense table in dark prison suits. Julian’s once-pristine appearance was replaced by a hollow, defeated posture, while Beatrice stared blankly at her lap, stripped of her jewels and status.

At the prosecution table sat Arthur Montgomery, stoic and immovable, with eight-year-old Lily seated quietly beside him in a modest navy dress, her silver heart necklace resting over her collar.

When Detective Vance took the stand, he presented the decrypted digital ledgers seized from Julian’s office. The court listened in horrified silence as the prosecutor read the wire transfers funding the systematic poisoning of Clara Montgomery, alongside the recorded phone calls between Julian and the illicit Zurich lab.

The final witness called by the state was Lily.

A murmur swept through the courtroom as the young girl walked calmly to the witness stand. The defense attorney attempted to object to a child testifying, but the judge overruled it.

"Lily," the prosecutor asked gently, "do you know why we are here today?"

Lily adjusted her posture, her small voice carrying clearly across the silent room. "We are here because my mother, Clara, wanted me to bring the truth home."

She looked directly across the courtroom into the eyes of her uncle and great-aunt.

"My mother lived in a cold room without food or medicine because of them," Lily said, her voice unwavering. "She wasn't crazy, and she didn't leave because she didn't love my grandfather. She left to keep me alive. They thought I was too small to remember... but my mother taught me that truth is stronger than money."

In the jury box, several jurors wiped away tears. Julian bowed his head in utter shame, unable to meet his niece's steady, clear gaze.
